I swear there was a link about some sort of color run type event and a camera completely covered in the powder.

Yeah, that was me. Someone was trashing B+W filters because she went to a color-run, purposely had some of that crap thrown at her camera, and some of it got past the filter and onto her lens. I quoted her post here, then decided to delete it. But I'm sure you can find the thread if interested.

The last two years saw us Ontarians suffering through back to back record breaking heatwave summers. This summer has been the complete opposite. Today, August 26th, has brought our first heat advisory of the year. Currently we are sitting at 29C and 62% humidity, but both are supposed to keep going up through the day. Humidex is supposed to climb over 40C.

That stuff is so fine it can get past any filter. The best way to protect your camera from the powder is to leave it at home...

You guys are sissies. 29c is a comfortable night time temperature. ;):):) were are 40 real-C none of this humidex stuff. Pretty much there every day.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

I wouldn't think it could get past the filter. The threads are usually pretty tight. Now the seals on the lens is something totally different.

The threads, yes. But the glass isn't sealed to the filter mount in any way (and you wouldn't want it to be), just sandwiched between the filter mount and inner retaining ring. Doesn't take a whole lot of air pressure change from wind, focusing and zooming to pull fine particulates around the edges.

Somehow, the author of the thread in question came to think that filters were sealed "vacuum tight". So now she's had a "bad experience" with B+W filters.

In the past few years 29C would have been a cool day, this year it's a heatwave. Our "cool" night temps have been dropping to 10C.

I'd take 'blast furnace' over 'sauna' any day.

If I was going to get myself and my camera into conditions like that, I'd take a filter and put a tiny bead of silicone around the edge of the glass to seal it. Make it a dedicated 'dirty' filter. If you think the threads won't seal, put a film of vaseline on the threads. That'll snag any powder and allow the filter to be easily removed.

Baseball 2014 is officially done.

2nd place in Tuesday's league, 4th place in Thursday's league. And picked up the Female Most Improved award in Thursday's league. Apparently I made an impression when I kept burning the outfield players.
