'Sup, guys?

I was looking forward to some nice T-storms today, but it seem they have been diverted to AZ. :( It never rains on my days off, and I love rain.

It's been threatening here for days but not even a drop. Ended up watering the lawn this morning so I'm sure we will get something today. Remnants of the hurricane supposedly headed here by the weekend. I hope it has some water left for us and hasn't wrung itself dry.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I bought a new window for the house this weekend. Are shims even needed anymore? It looks like I put a bead of caulk around the outer flange and screw it to the house? Am I missing something?

Nope. Replacing a window these days it pretty darn ease. We replaced all the windows in our IL house a fw years back. Re-trimming was the most difficult part.

Oh, and the shim part? Shims help to level the window before you screw it down. Not all sills are level and you don't want a cock-eyed window. Just put two shims on the sill, place the window on them and adjust until the window is level and screw the sucker down.

I haven't cut the old window out yet. But as the new one is all one unit with a flange I don't see driving nails into the side frame and shimming it like the window that's in there now.

That's kinda what I though.

Oh, and when you foam it, remember to use the foam specifically for windows and doors (blue can). The red can Great Stuff works great at filling big cracks but will warp you windows to the point that they will no longer work. Luckily my neighbor passed on this info before I did my windows.

This! Had a neighbor replace some windows and used the red can Great Stuff...got into all sorts of places that it shouldn't have and the window didn't want to work.

Great tip! Took me a spell to find appropriate screws for the application.

Getting into the places is not that bad, but that stuff exerts a lot of force. My neighbors window was literally bowed and unopenable. Luckily he did it on old windows but he ended up replacing them.

These were flanged replacement windows. There are springs on each side to assist in raising and lowering them. The foam got into the springs and suddenly they weren't springs any more. LOL
