Also, using the Tamron 150-600, I sure could have used a monopod.

How did the Tammy perform at 600?

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Very well, despite of what you may have heard about it being soft at the extreme end. I try not to shoot wide open, though. Better at f/8 or f/9. For jets, when you can keep the shutter speed up, this lens is pretty good. If you want to slow it down for props... let's say 1/200, while panning... it's a mess. For me, anyway. :(

This is from a few days ago at 600mm, and heavily cropped (I was shooting from outside the base):

Well Russia beat USA 2-1 to win the World Under 17 Hockey Challenge.

It was quite the game to watch. Very physical, very fast paced, and quite entertaining. A couple of guys from TSN were there reporting on the game. Didn't recognize them, but tried snagging a couple of pictures as they were in the media suite just above our left shoulders. I wanted to steal the TSN mic they kept leaving on the ledge.

Tenty-five years ago today, I was stationed in Berlin, Germany, and witnesses the opening of the Berlin Wall. What an experience. Biggest party I'll ever see, followed closely by the official reunification the following October. :)

I was 8 years old when the wall came down. I remember seeing it on the news and hearing people talk about it. I knew that the wall was there, splitting east from west, but had no idea why. No one bothered to explain things like that to young kids.

The way history is taught in schools is horrible. It's like the teachers are purposely trying to boar the heck out of you. The History channel does such a better job. Should just turn on the TV and get rid of the history teachers.

Schools here are intentionally avoiding the holocaust (and several other events), to "not offend anyone" as it was explained to me.

I think it depends on where you go to school...I've got a kid in 8th grade and they have read several 'holocaust books' as well as learned about plenty of offensive stuff ;) As they teach history around here tho, they don't get to the unification of Germany until about 10th grade.

Our history teachings were pretty decent. In grade school it was mostly about Canada's history, from discovery, through the wars and Confederation, and early politics. This time of year always brought out the war stories. We were never shielded from any of it. The only mandatory history class that we had to take in high school was in grade 10. My teacher, Mr. Massey, made history wonderfully thrilling. He was a great story teller and passionate about the subject. The holocaust definitely was not hidden from us. We watched all the movies in full graphic detail, we had survivors visit the school to tell their stories, and no one ever minimized it.

The History Channel has been on here for over three hours now. Right now it's "D-Day to Victory".

The only family members that I know of that have ever been to war were my Grandpa and Great Grandpa Halliday. Neither one had to go as they were farmers. I don't know what Great Grandpa did, but Grandpa was a radar technician. He followed the action all over Europe, fixing radar stations. He was called home early to take care of the farm when Great Grandpa got sick. He almost didn't go to begin with, he had been offered a teaching position at some university on the east coast. I'll have to ask Dad again about why he didn't go there.

I wish I could have known Grandpa better. He died when I was 7 years old, and wasn't one to spend much time with kids. His favourite thing to do with us was to sneak up behind us when we were playing and scare us. He was really good at it and we loved it. He had a university education, went to The University of Western Ontario in London (an hour from here). Don't know what he took, but I figure it had something to do with radar technologies. When he was there he got on the wrestling team and was quite good. He tried out for the Olympic team. During the final match he pulled his right shoulder and missed getting on the team.

How so? In the schools here it seems more event driven. Important events on certain dates with little context or insight into the people who were part of the events.

just the level of history...

normally you start off with tollund man (bog man), bronze ages, mott & balieys, vikings, romans, egyptians, greeks, the middle east, hadrian, anglo saxons, 1066 and king herold, william the conqueror, magna carta, king henry and edwards, the plague/black death, middle ages, the tudors, expanding the british empire, spanish armada, BEIC, gunpowder plots, oliver cromwell, thomas moore, fire of london, industrial revolution, french revolution, war of independence, lord nelson, isembard kingdom brunel, charge of the light brigade, then a lot of time is on WW1 and WW2.
