My daughter was going to bring a bunch of "Santa gifts" over the other night since her family is going to be at my place for Christmas Eve and Christmas. Then she called and said her battery was dead, and would get a jump and get it replaced on her way over. . . .

She texted me yesterday from the Hyundai dealer: Apparently, the morons at Pep Boys had initially put her battery in backwards (switched the + and -) blew a bunch of fuses, and it kept the car from being able to shift into reverse.

Pep Boys must have had one of those alcohol-soaked Christmas parties you guys were talking about.

That could be. This did happen in the evening, probably around 7ish.

The lesson: never take your business to a garage where the boys are too peppy.

I recently tried to remove a bolt from my rear strut and couldn't. It was in such an awkward position and tightened down wayyyy too tight.

That's my over-tightened story.

We have problems with power transformers where the lid bolts are over-tightened to prevent oil leaks. When the lid gasket leaks people go out and just keep cranking on the bolts.

New transformers now come with completely welded lids so it is a factory job to take it off. Old ones with the oil leaks usually have the bolts replaced with dome nuts/studs and the flat inner surface of the dome nuts have a milled section to take an O-ring. This stops the bolt leaking. They then weld a metal strip between the tank and the lid to stop all the leaks.

It least it appears that he remembered to put the Lock Tight on the bolt.

That's the oil drain plug. Definitely do not want Locktite on that!

This was the results of an employee who forgot to tighten the timing belt tensioner bolts.

There are places that put the blue Locktite on oil plugs. What you definitely don't want to put on a drain plug is the tan/grey Locktite.

If you look at the head of the bolt on the inside it looks like blue Locktite. Either that or a blue colored gasket sealer. Of course Locktite goes on the treads when it is used, not on the inside of the head of the bolt.

Edit: Looking at the photo closer, it does look like that is just one of those composite "washers" instead of gasket sealer or Locktite. 8-)

It appears the valves got intimate with the pistons there.

That's one way to get the carbon off the valves.
