I do have one long time friend who I am thinking of dumping, or blocking, as he is extremely left wing in his politics, and is constantly posting stuff about how the Conservatives are screwing things up. This I don't mind so much, but he never, ever, posts what would be a better alternative. Plus, some of the poster type stuff he posts, anyone could make and put on whatever fits their agenda.

Yea, I have one like that as well but leaning the other way. Mostly Obama bashing and some pretty harsh stuff. I have dropped him as I got tired of all the propaganda. I don't mind a good political discussion but when it borders on a hateful obsession or is so one sided using untrue or discredited info to push an agenda, I tune out.

The one good thing about Facebook is that it has allowed me to reconnect with a lot of my old high school classmates, such as this fellow:

IMAGE: http://johnwright.smugmug.com/Military/Vietnam-1968/i-8cmnTqT/0/L/Roger%20and%20John%20VN%201968-L.jpg

This was the last time I saw him (Vietnam 1968) until our 45 year reunion in 2010. He lives in North Carolina and he usually calls me on the holidays. We'll be getting together for our 50 year class reunion later in 2015.

I'm in the process of searching for nursing homes and assisted living facilities for my Dad, who's 84. He's slipping fairly quickly physically and mentally. He's in his own home now, but within the year, I imagine I may have to move him and take away his car. :( This blows.

I have a sister in Utah who's offered to take of him, but he wants nothing to do with her. I think two of my sisters have pretty much burnt that bridge by asking him for money over these many years. My wife and I both work full time, so he can't stay with us. He's mentioned that he doesn't want to live with anyone anyhow. I hope it's not going to come down to me forcing him into a place; I'd rather him go voluntarily. But he's very independant, and he thinks he's doing fine.

We went through that the past 18 months with my mother-in-law. Physically she is okay for someone who is 91, but mentally she requires 24/7/365 supervision. We're very fortunate that she has the financial resources to cover her care costs.

That is always a hard spot to be in.

Fortunately we have not had to deal with that situation yet. Grandma B was in a nursing home, but since she passed when I was 9 years old, I have no idea how that all was dealt with. Grandpa B was living alone and doing quite well until he passed suddenly. Friends would check in with him every day. Grandpa H passed from a stroke after having surgery. Grandma H moved herself into a retirement community with a bunch of her friends, she had a heart attack and passed well before her health ever declined. Mom never had the chance to get to that stage.
Dad is the one we may have to deal with. I live with him still, and will until either he has to go into care or I get married. No plans on either one in the foreseeable future. His health will give out before his mind does.

It's too bad the mind and body can't go at the same time. Having a sharp mind in a body that doesn't work and is in constant pain isn't good. And if your mind is gone, but your body insists on continuing for years, it's tough for your loved ones even if the individual doesn't know what's going on and is in lala land.

We went through the same thing with my MIL. She didn't want to leave her house but could no longer live alone. We pretty much forced here, really convinced her to try it for 3 months, but I think we all knew it was permanent. She has been there a year now and it's the best move we ever made. Even she agrees. She has friends, activities, she has gotten sharper and more engaged as the other people draw her out. Last time we visited, she took off for a couple of days to go on a Vegas outing with her buds. She is a much happier person as the other people have given her some purpose and most importantly, companionship.

Companionship and activity are hugely important. When Grandma decided that she was moving into the retirement community, those were top priority for her. She had a nice house, lived across the street from her church, had a car, and lots of things to do, but it was taking more and more effort to keep up with everything she wanted to do. A bunch of them bought their apartments before the building even began. She absolutely loved that place.
My dad is a social butterfly, which is difficult in a tiny community, especially in the winter. As long as he can physically keep up to his social life he'll be fine.

Dealing with aging never seems fair or easy. My grandmother was in an assisted living facility for 12 years....she lived to be 98 and her mind was tack sharp until the very end. Her body wasn't so cooperative.

We've had to deal with the aging grandparents also. My wife's grandfather went from no care in slow steps to full care as he slowly got worse. My grandmother never got as far as an aged care facility, she was in hospital for a few months - not well but not terribly sick and then within a week she had passed away. My family was lucky enough to visit her the weekend before she passed away and she was very bright and interested in all that was going on, so we will always remember her like that.

An aunt on my side and an uncle on my wife's side are both very early 60's and suffering early onset dementia. Sad to see this happen to people at an age that is considered young now. He's in high care but my aunt is still well enough to be at home.

I would love to visit Middle-earth. I bet those female elves are little freaks in the sack.
