I just looked up a couple of 2014 Toyota's and most are 10k for the first then 5k after that, what year and model is yours and I will get you the factor service table.

Cool. 2015 Highlander LEX (or ELX)

Yea all engine options are listed as 10k for the first oil change and every 5k after that.

I've often wondered about letting the first oil change go longer than the following oil changes.

Seems like you'd want to change the oil sooner in a new engine that just breaking in. If I recall correctly, way back when we were told to change the oil the first time after 500-600 miles.

I've often wondered the same thing and the only real logical explanation I was given is the factory knows what type of oil they put in and don't know what the customer will put in, so the short intervals are to account for poor oil quality. Seemed plausible but I am still skeptical about it.

If I were to buy a brand new vehicle I would do the first oil change at 5,000 kms and then go to 10,000 km intervals. Most vehicles in Canada are 10k intervals now, whether they take regular or synthetic oil. But most also have oil life monitors that will yell at you earlier than 10k if you're not driving under perfect conditions at all time.

My thinking is that all the little kibbles and metal filings from manufacturing are floating around in there and I want them out.

Whatever you do, don't go beyond manufacturer's specifications. If anything ever happens to the engine, Toyota will look for every possible way to get out the warranty. K&N air filters can void warranties, skipping or being late on service intervals definitely will.

I thought the prices were in the Canon announcement and on the BH web page. $3,699 and $3,899 respectively.
