How can a camera be both full frame and crop?

It's all in software/firmware. Depending on the configuration you set it'll either shoot and record the full 24 mm x 36 mm sensor area, a 19 x 27 mm area from the center (1.3x crop - same size as the 1D series sensors) or a 15 x 22.5 mm area from the center for the 1.6x crop. Nikon's offered that (well, FF or 1.5x crop) in a couple of their models.

Why would you do that? Couldn't you just crop the picture in post and get the same result?

Image size. When you don't need the full sensor data, it allows you to shoot and generate much smaller images.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

That makes sense. I guess 50 mp is too much of a good thing.

It's something like a full frame sensor with the same pixel density as the 7D2. Now if they gave you a speed boost with the smaller image files (like Nikon does . . .) they might sell me on it now, rather than later.

It's hockey night in this town!

A friend got free tickets to the Sarnia Legionnaires game tonight. Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, playing against the Leamington Flyers, in the old Brock Street Barn. We're up 1-0 half way through the first.

Doesn't that happen with every new body announcement?

Yep....it sure does. Whatever comes out, is never enough.

Maybe we should start being "proactive" - whenever Canon announces a new body/lens/flash/whatever, just post a quote of a typical pre-acquisition post about generation x-1! :{)#

I guess that would be cool, especially for those using the limit of their long lenses for birding or wildlife, who end up cropping quite a bit. It would come in handy with my 150-600. For those who crop their macro shots to get closer closer-up, too.

And Instead of having your, let's say 70-200 FOV on a FF, or 112-320 FOV on a crop, you could use it as a 70-320. I wonder if you could set a button (through custom functions) to quickly switch back and forth between crop and FF, without having to go through the menu each time.

It would give you the perception of a wider range on your typical walk-around lens.

It would be really nice if it would take EF-S lenses as well. One of the reasons I have not sold the 7D is because of the 17-55. That lens rocks.

The same way I feel about my EF-S 10-22 and 40D. But it's good to have a back-up body, or one for the wife/SO to use if you're both shooting at the same time.

I sold it, but I miss my EF-S 10-22. I could shoot with it down to 12mm on my 1DIV, but @10-11mm the mirror would hit the back of the 10-22 lens. I suspect using an EF-S lens on a 5Ds body will be a mechanical, not a sensor, issue. I guess part of it depends on how different the new mirror mechanical works in the 5Ds bodies.
