I wonder how the folks in the south are feeling about "global warming".

Their feelings will depend more on what they already believe than on their local weather. Climate change doesn't mean that every spot on the planet will be warmer all the time. The average temp is higher than in recent history; that's part of it. Weather is becoming more erratic.

The trick is to go about your routine as normal as possible. There has been panic buying of bread and milk. A bit too early to really say but we should only get a drenching from the rain depression after the cyclone crosses.

WHy is it always bread and milk. Heck, I would head straight to the pizza and beer isle myself. Much more important. ;)

Eggs always get thrown in too around here when people are panic shopping so I always assumed that everyone just wanted to eat french toast when they were stuck at home.

Perishables when the power might go out?
Should be canned food and bacon! :)

Of course, who needs refrigerators in this weather?

re: Climate change, I just recently mentioned that last summer there was a constant flow of icebergs floating past the coast of Newfoundland headed south. More than anyone had ever seen. This was all a huge percentage of the Greenland Ice flow breaking off and making it's way south. "There goes part of Greenland"

I remember thinking to myself "All that cold that used be locked up north is going south"

This is a VERY simplistic yet accurate example of why global "warming" makes things colder sometimes in some places.

A few winters ago (2010/2011) it was the UK and parts of the continent that had the harshest winter on record.

This was due to the water temps in the North Atlantic and the North Sea having gone DOWN due to the massive amount of ice that had broken free from Arctic and Scandinavian flows.
Which of course broke free because temps had risen globally and thawed off all those chunks of ice.

These are direct action reaction examples that need little explanation. The arctic temps moving south in North America now are a more complex example, but the triggers that caused this shift are based on similar principles, and the route cause is the same. Warmer temps cause patterns to shift and temps to move.

Just saying.

And here in Calgary, we are experiencing temps well above freezing, way higher than normal. It is expected that this will continue on until spring. Heck maybe we will be considered the tropics some day. :)

Bottled water and gasoline are rather popular as well.

Pizza and alcohol are important, but what really gets me is when people risk their lives going out in a storm to buy milk. Any household should have enough food in the freezer/pantry/cupboard to keep a family alive for a few days. Big deal if you don't have milk, drink water instead. Thaw out the chicken that you have buried in the bottom of the freezer.

Our biggest need would be gasoline to run the generator. We can run the water pump, sump pump, fridge, freezers, microwave, etc. We keep enough gas on hand to run it non-stop for at least 24 hours. And if we ever got to the point that we couldn't keep warm enough in the house, several of our neighbours have wood stoves.

We went from having one of the warmest winters on record to having the coldest winter on record the next year. This winter started out warm but is now setting cold temp records again. We definitely have been having major swings in weather patterns.

I imagine they're mostly people with small children.

Fresh milk doesn't keep so well that you can really stock up on it. Canned and powdered keep well, but they don't taste the same, and kids might not like them.

Unopened, refrigerated milk keeps for 7 days past the printed date on the container. 5-7 days if it's opened. And children will survive for a few days on water and juice.
For babies, powdered formula lasts a long time and can be/is made with water.
It's very rare these days that we don't know a winter storm/severe thunderstorm/hurricane/typhoon/etc is coming. Tornadoes are different. If you can't survive a few days without a specific item, stock up just before the storm arrives. No need to risk your life going out in the middle of a storm.

Different story for those living out on the east coast right now, digging tunnels just to get out of the house is extreme.

We're down to a refreshing -14F already tonight. :D

The snow is nice and squeaky, the stars are shining, and the air is nice and crisp!

For a lot of people, yes. But I enjoy it. Wouldn't want to be broken down on the side of the road or stuck in a ditch somewhere, but I would get all dressed up and go for a walk.

I just checked the thermometer that we have outside the kitchen window. It's reading -19F/-28C. No wonder Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for tonight.
