In celebration of Pi Day tomorrow a few of us are getting together to enjoy pizza pie and pie. Sounds easy enough, except that folks want deep dish pizza, which is proving difficult to find - in frozen or fresh made formats. And Jeff wants key lime pie. Key lime juice and key limes are also proving difficult to find. Going to have to head to the city to look for them.

Deep dish pizza is much easier to make than a flat one. For a good thin pizza you really need a good stone but for deep dish, one of your cast iron skillets will do fantastically. We often make deep dish while camping. It comes out fantastic in cast iron.

I think I'll try making one sometime. Jeff found some frozen ones to try, so I don't need to make it tomorrow. I looked up some recipes and they look easy enough - for someone who isn't afraid of making their own dough.

I've been bit by spiders (Wolf and centipede), wasps (too many to count) bees (same) one scorpion, snake, dogs, cat, mice, tick, flea, crab, turtle, several fish, and fire ants. Of all those fire ants are the worst. Their bite is almost unnoticeable at least for several second. But when the burn starts, it burns really bad and for a freaking month or two. It just doesn't go away. Fire ant bites are the absolute worst.

What, no shark bites?

LV Moose wrote in post #17473212 (external link)
My experience with fire ants. When I was first stationed at Austin, TX, we spent our first night in temporary quarters on the base (Bergstrom). I was tired that night and just threw my pants on the floor. The next morning I got up in the dark so as not to wake the wife and kids, and put my pants on. Before I knew it, I was burning from my feet to my waist. Pulled of my pants and flipped on the light; the floor in the area where my pants were was covered in fire ants, as were my pants. I had hundreds of bites (stings really) all over, including my crotch. Oi Vay!

That musta really put some fire in the ol'...... um, well, it musta stung lots, eh?

Pretty dead here.

I'm thinking of selling my Sigma 35 f/1.4 to fund another lens. To sell on the forums (which I've never done) do need a PayPal account or are there alternatives? I doubt I'll use it very often.

Can't help ya. I have always sold locally sometimes posting in craig's list but many times just letting a few friends know and they let a few friends know and so on and pretty soon I get a call. :)

You don't need a PayPal account to sell here, but it might help. I will say that the things I've bought from members here they've been willing to take a check. Expect both parties to do more due diligence regarding the other before being willing to close the deal, though.

Yeah, I was wondering about that; taking a check. There are some folks on this forum that I feel I know well enough to trust. Others that I wouldn't say I distrust, but that I just don't have the same feeling about.

I too have been thinking of selling some lenses to fund other ones. My thought is to sell some of my lesser used lenses, and go with a few zoom lenses, and maybe one or two primes.

What is likely to be on the block is;
40D
EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS (ver1)
EF 85mm 1.8
TS -E 24 (Ver1)
EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS (Ver1) (love the lens, but use it little, and the new 100-400, with the 24-105 will cover the range well)
5D MkII (though not until a replacement is bought)

To keep;
EF 17-40 f/4L (for landscape mostly)
EF 24-105mm f/4L IS (this is my workhorse, and used for nearly 75% of all my shots, fantastic walk-about lens)
EF 50 1.4 (keep one half decent fast prime)
EF 100 f/2.8 Macro USM
Kenko Extension Tube set
Canon Life-Size Converter EF
Kenko 1.4 TC

To purchase;
EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L II (the reasoning being that it can be used with TC's to get similar range to the old one with the 40D)
5D ??

Would love to get:
EF 11-24mm f4 L (would sell the 11-40 at that point)
Canon TC's

As far as what camera I will get, the jury is still out. Not sure whether to go with the 5DS (R), or wait for the 5D IV. Hoping for better video, maybe 4k. I have not ventured to the equipment section yet, but may to get some other folks ideas.

If anyone here has any thoughts, please fire away. I am just starting to figure things out, and like most things, can always use some good direction. :)

I have successfully bought and sold on this forum.

There is a local Facebook page dedicated to the sale of photographic equipment. Lots of activity there, and local. There most likely is one in most major cities.

The new 100-400 is absolutely amazing. Mike H (Fish Dood) has one. I am stunned at the IQ, speed and overall effectiveness.

Jim, you're going to love the new 100-400. I was skeptical at first because the rental copy I had first was disappointing. I had a stellar version 1 copy before, and other than the new improved IS, the rented version II wasn't much better. However the Version II that I have now is outstanding.

Thanks for that confirmation. I had heard in a couple other places it was good, but even better to hear from folks I know.

My only other bigger dilema, is whether to wait for the 5D IV, or look closer at one of the 5DS's. I would love to have a camera for an Alaska trip we are going on in mid-June. I have chartered a yacht for eight of us, for a week trip from Juneau to Sitka, headed wherever we want on the way, plus will have a couple nights in Juneau, and four more in Sitka. I will definitely get the new 100-400 II by then, but the 5D IV definitely won't be out, and it is cutting it close for the release of the 5DS's too. I think I will check into a pre-order on a 5DS (R), and could always cancel it if I want.

Any thoughts on the differences between the two. I realise the R eliminates the the low-pass filter. (Why is it more expensive with something removed?) This filter eliminates moire, and some false colours, while removing it allows for sharper images with more detail. Would an amateur like myself even notice the lack of sharpness, given a 50.6 MP camera. And, is 4K video really worth it?

Jim, the reason the "unfiltered" sensor version costs more is that it is the same sensor with an additional layer added to offset/negate the AA filter. one more layer = more cost.

I don't know whether we'd be able to see a difference. I think the better question to ask yourself is whether the subject matter you usually shoot contains things that would frequently result in moire.
