Took out my iPhone the other day to shoot the sunset. The colors were all wrong. The pink was flaming yellow and white. I was so depressed. I didn't bring my SL1 or anything else for that matter. This morning I looked outside and there was an insane sunrise. I ran to my SL1 because the 18-55 was on it. Took about 10 pictures, all the colors were right on. Ran to get my 5D2 with the 17-40, looked inside, no CF card. Ran around for about 2 minutes finding a CF card (I have about 12 of them lying around). Put the one back up for the back up in and the colors were already gone! Dang it!

But the DSLR get much better color and exposure in any condition versus my trusty iPhone, which is fine most of the time, but not for sunrises or sunsets.

That's why I now carry around my SL1 80% of the time, makes for a big purse.

My original was very sharp. This one seems sharper, but I'm not positive. Maybe I just get a better focus with it. Before purchasing, I rented one for three days from Pro Photo in portland. 30 bucks for the weekend. If you have access to a rental store I'd recommend giving it a try. I took this shot of a bee from around 30 feet away. Click to the next image to see the crop. http://mchurliman.zenfolio.com …50790/h3172f532#h3172f532 (external link)

I very often wish for a small, capable camera that can be carried in a pocket. I wouldn't trade away the capabilities of a full sized camera, but they just are not convenient. My iPhone is great for a lot of situations, but fails miserably in others. I'd like something that has RAW, manual controls, good quality, and be waterproof.

I go on a lot of hikes locally and don't feel like dragging around all my stuff and many times I run into some interesting critters... with no camera. :(. That's why I want a good superzoom that's small but still decent. A compact would do nicely.

My 100-400 push pull was very sharp. I wanted the version 2 but found the resale market on the original very disappointing. I ended up selling it to my son for a price he couldn't pass up and bought the new one. It's lighter. It's very sharp. Colors seem more true. AI Servo mode works much better for me than the old one. It focuses to about 3 feet. At 400 I can get really nice flower shots from that distance. I'm very happy with it.

I imagine the resale price is much lower than it used to be, given the new version being out now. What kind of prices did you see for them, Mike?

If you want to see what a 1DX with the EF 600 can do, here's a link to that dragster crash over the weekend: http://markjrebilas.com/blog/?p=21971#more-21971 (external link)

Wow! Actually, I find the still shots more dramatic, especially zoomed in like that, than the video.

Man, that crop looks pretty darn decent, all right.

Exactly. I've taken the full gear on bike rides, packed safely in a backpack, but it takes time to pull everything out to take a picture. And I don't always want to carry a backpack. Concert/sports venues often don't allow the cameras, or simply using a big camera is intrusive. Plus they are not fond of water. I'd like something that I can use in water.

I would like to replace my S95 with something having a longer zoom. Plus, it's not working that great anymore after a few drops by the wife, including two into the sand... getting fully buried once ... and at least once onto a hard surface.

Jim, used prices for the old 100-400 run around $900 average these days. I sold mine for just over $1,000 net to me to after shipping costs.

Our P&S, mostly in my wife's possesion, is an S95 too. I think the images it produces are fantastic, given its size, but I just hate the slow shutter response. That would be my first wish for a camera like that. Anyone have any ideas on this? A great optical zoom would sure be nice too.

Well, in the spreadsheet I have my camera gear listed on, I did up a couple columns totalling things to go, and costs to buy what I might like, just to see where it all stands dollar wise for me, and I had valued the old 100-400 at $800, so I am not too far out.

Heather gave me a G12 several years ago and it's become my go-to camera. It's really rare that I break out the DSLRs anymore. The G12 has everything you mentioned above except being waterproof.

Wow! That's almost enough incentive to unload mine...

ProPhoto in Portland had three used Canon 100-400 version 1 for sale last week..... $999.00 , $899.00, and $799.00. I've been seeing used gear selling on potn for much better prices than they bring through Craigslist in the Portland area.

We had a G10 until it was stolen, and I found the shutter lag to be a huge pain. Is the G12 any faster, and how fast is the G?? (wherever they are now)

I just checked eBay, and prices for a used 100-400 go from $600-1,200 USD. Sounds like $900 in the middle would be a good price. I rarely buy or sell through eBay, though I did buy my 100-400 there only barely used, and got a great lens.

I've always been uncomfortable buying or selling unless done in person. One person sells, the other checks out the item. If he/she likes it money changes hands and it's done. I remember a few years back Pete sold a lens to someone in eastern Europe. If memory serves he ended up without the lens and without the money. That said, I've rarely heard of dissatisfied buyers or sellers here on potn.
