Tim, what were the rental costs on the 100-400 II? Locally they are $50/day, $37 for an additional day, $50 for a weekend, and $150/week. All in Canadian pesos of course.

I rented the 100-400 II over the holidays and they had a discount for that period. It was $141 for two weeks, it would have been $22 less, but I included the all-risks insurance so that if it got stolen, or lost, or dropped, its 100% covered. We were on a trip during part of the rental period and I didn't want to have any worries about theft from a hotel room or the car. I used lensrentals.com - good people to deal with.

I see they have it for $101/week, or $177 for two weeks. It would be $202 with shipping for two weeks, and no insurance, which is about $258 CAD, so not a lot cheaper, and I have not checked to see if I could get a second week discount locally, as they don't list that.

Checking prices there on the A7S, and it would be $282 with shipping for two weeks. That is $369 CAD, way less than a week rental here.

I have no idea about the current models, but, while it isn't DSLR fast, the G12 shutter lag isn't really noticeable.

I have the G12, and I hardly use it. The shutter lag does bother me more than I expected. I used it a lot until I got the SL1.

I don't rent equipment here, near where I live, mainly because there are so few camera stores around anymore. There are none within 30 miles of my house worth anything, no rentals at all. In DC and NOVA there may be one or two good ones. Sad. But $400 for a week to rent a new Canon? Depends on how much I'm getting paid.

While I love the idea of the size of the SL1, doesn't having to use the big Canon glass on it kinda negate the gained (lost) size factor? Or, do you just use a small lens with it for heading out with it?

That's why I am looking for a small compact super-zoom for a camera I can have with me always. The body is not the biggest problem, it's the glass, especially the 100-400 but add in the 17-55 and it becomes a quite heave kit, definitely one needing a bag or backpack. Went out to take a look at the Nikon P600 and the size is nice, the zoom is fantastic, but no raw support.

Well the weather finally decided to co-operate and help out the maple syrup season. The temperature dropped to -4C last night, and came back up to +4C this afternoon, with brilliant sunlight all day. The trees had just about stopped running, but sure took off today. As of 5:30 this afternoon I have collected 8.5 gallons of sap, and the trees haven't slowed down yet. Going to be boiling for quite awhile tonight.

Good question. I bought the 24 and 40 pancakes, both are very sharp. But I use the kit lens on it 18-55 STM. It's a great little combo. I like it even better than the 17-40 on it. And just got the 55-250 STM and it's really sharp, too. Makes for light going and really fits in a medium sized purse. I bought a few Domke cloths, I hope they will protect the camera with lens while I run around town.

And I love maple syrup.
