I'm 5'6" with a shortish stride. I'm sure there are different sized machines that would suit different people, the gym I went to had all the same machines.

My wife and I got ourselves in a bit of trouble with an out and back bike hike. Our plan was to follow the Illinois river for 10 miles and then turn around. When we got 10 miles out we were still feeling really great and decided to push out a little farther. At 16 miles we decided it was time to turn around. The trip out was a breeze, the trip back was horrible. Turns out that for the trip out we had been going downhill the whole way and we had a strong wind at out backs. The trip back was all uphill with a strong headwind.

I've never tried an elliptical machine. Based on what has been said here I probably wouldn't like it much, I am over 6 foot tall and a fairly long stride.

Wow, tall lady, you have a natural advantage for taking pics in a crowded place ....... I'm only 5'9" :-(

On my father's side I am one of the short ones. My father is 6'8", my grandmother is 6'5", and my mother is only 5'4".

^ that.

we have a lake by us, it is ironically 5k in perimeter, and on "normal" days, there are hundreds of people running, jogging and walking etc.

I would love to walk our lake but alas, it's over 300 km. around.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Actually we have had an exceptionally wet winter and spring. The lake is still very low but it has come up almost 3 feet from what it was in December. But there are some lakes around here that are still well below capacity and they are turning into puddles. :)

Last summer one of the feeder rivers got so low that it was cut off from the main lake. We were hiking down there and some of the remaining mud-pits were filled with fish all swimming around in a couple inches of water. Some were rather large, well over a foot or more in length. I didn't have my camera with me but I though I would return later for a few interesting shots. Overnight the herons, pelicans, gulls, cormorants, hawks, whatever must have swooped in and cleaned the place out. All that was left were hundreds of baking fish carcases and lots of stink.

Come run around my lake ;)

We don't have any small lakes nearby that have running trails that go around them. Lake Chipican, in the city, has trails on two sides of it, but they don't really connect as one end of the lake is swamp. Canatara Park, where it's located, is the big park in the city. It's located right on the lake, so it's also a main beach destination. We do have lots of trails around, the major one being the Howard Watson Nature Trail. It's 16 kms long, built on the old CNR rail.
In London there is a mountain biking trail around the reservoir. It's about 20 kms, depending on how many detours you take. I haven't been brave enough to try it yet, as it's supposed to be pretty intensive. And the direction of travel is controlled, you can't just turn around and come back the way you came from, so once you start, you're committed. The direction of travel alternates daily. Bike helmets are mandatory for everyone.

it is happening, but slowwwwwwwwwwwly.... :D

Up here in the Cold White North, I did a couple longer bike rides mostly on city trails last weekend. Just a couple icier patches in shady areas, otherwise dry as a bone.

I never could get into exercise at home for some reason. Go to the gym, no problem. For the last 4-5 months, I have been doing a 45 minute spin class, followed by a 75 minute yoga class, 3 times a week. Plus a few bike rides as I can, and lots of long walks with the dog. Plus, I still do a fair bit of physical work, while I am still a young fella at least. :)

At home, I do a couple hundred situps and pushups daily, but that only takes about 10 minutes. Thinking of adding in some squats too.

We have a 5 year old Bowflex Revolution which has about 3 hours on it, if anyone is interested. :)
