It is that. One of my cousins has been tracing our family roots way back. She currently working on one line in the early middle ages. One line she traced back to a distant relative who became ill and died in jail. According to the records, he had stolen a black sheep.

Sometimes you discover things better left buried in the past.

For a lot of Aussie we are proud of our Convict ancestors - they built this nation. I've been researching my family tree since the '80s and only since Ancestr.com came about did I find the convicts I suspected, could have found them before but it would have been a lot more work. Here my convict ancestors. The last two are my G-G-G-G Grandparents, their daughter married my Carlill ancestor who first came to Australia.

It's amazing to find out more than just peoples names. For example, I have the Second Postmaster of the NSW colonies and someone who was the Water Police Magistrate of Sydney as ancestors. My wife has an similar number of convict ancestors. Chances are if you can trace someone back earlier than 1830-40 then there is a real good chance they or their parents were transported here.
