I'm at work, and not.

Having an aging parent with issues, sucks. I may have to step in, without his permission, and legally take over his finances. It won't go down well.

Yeah, this started with us too, about the time we headed into our 50's. Not a lot of fun, and it certainly is tough on them as they loose the things they are used to doing. Driving was a huge thing with both our fathers (mine is gone now). We now manage my FIL's finaces (my MIL is gone), as he was making many blunders, and would be totally susceptible to being scammed. My mom is still doing fine to a large degree, at least her mind is strong, I just wish she would put more effort into her physical well being.

Oh well, I imagine our kids will have to deal with the same thing in 20-30 years.

We've been fortunate so far with dealing with aging folks. My Grandpa H died from a stroke following surgery, he had been fine until he refused to have an injured toe looked at and got gangrene. About 10 years later Grandma H sold her house and moved into a retirement community. She passed from a heart attack.
Grandma B went willingly (as far as I know) into a care facility where she passed from health complications. Grandpa B was mentally fit and getting physically rough when he passed from a heart attack at 91. He had been living alone for 10 years, with friends and neighbours looking in on him. He lived on Vancouver Island, so no family was close.

Mom passed at 62. Cancer took her health long before she got old.

Dad is turning 70 in 3 weeks. He's mentally good, not quite as sharp as he used to be, but not failing by any means. He'll go downhill physically first as he's got, what the doctors believe to be, early stages of Parkinson's. For the foreseeable future, I live with him.

Anyone here have the 17-55? One POTN user is reporting an issue where this lens has issues auto focusing on distant objects. If interested, try this simple test:

1. Set lens to 35mm, and in AV set the f/stop 2.8.
2. Set the AF to one-shot and de-focus the lens. Then focus on a distant subject. (mine was the shorline on the other side of the lake, about 500 yards or so).
3. Take a picture and go back to step 2 and take several of the same object refocusing each time.

Check you pictures and see how many are in focus. Many are reporting that the 17-55 misses about 50% of the time.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I've tested mine and see no issue. It focused quick and accurate every time but many are saying that there is a design flaw and seeing issues. That's why I am curious. I would think that if the problem is as bad as it's made out to be, people all over would be seeing the problem.

It's gonna be chilly at baseball tonight! It's overcast, damp, windy, and only 12C. And the baseball diamonds are only a mile south of the lake.

We had a whole bunch just miles away. One tornado passed within 12 miles of us and blew a train off the tracks. Lots and lots of rain though. Our lake was 11 feet below level at the end of February and 5 feet over flood yesterday.

That close, eh? Wow! I saw the news video of the train off the tracks. Crazy weather.

Did you see the video of the train that blew off the Huey Long Bridge in New Orleans recently? Heather and I went over the same bridge on Amtrak's Sunset Limited in September...

Yes, I saw that video. Good thing there was no one underneath when it toppled over.

Hey, Jim, thanks for checking!

Life has been, shall we say, "interesting", although I wish there was more positive along with the negative, physical disabilities and financial and residential challenges and such.

My photo gear and most of my photos and software are stored away somewhere until I find a place to "land"...Oh Well

At least right now I do have internet access and so I'm here saying "Hi"!

Hey, you are here chatting with us, at least that is a good thing. ;)

Stay strong and be positive, while life throws you these curve balls. Hopefully all works out for you in the end, Tony.

Grrrrrrr.......

Cracked my iPhone a couple of weeks back. When I bought the phone I also bought the AppleCare+, so I ordered a replacement phone. Today I did a full backup on iTunes, went and got the new phone, and when I went to put everything on the new phone, the backup was gone. The only one there was from when I last backed up my iPhone 4, when I bought the 6.

Fortunately I had imported all the pictures to the hard drive, so I have all of them. And iTunes eventually coughed up all the apps, but all of my text messages, notes, etc are gone. :(

I think I'm going to have to start using iCloud as well as the computer.

For me, it was a wonderful day when I removed everything iTunes (and Apple) related from my computer. My iPod got turfed, and I now enjoy some of the great apps available for music, ones that let me have control. Plus, I got rid of those constant aggravating updates that Apple wanted me to do. Songs bought at $0.10 have saved me a bunch as well, instead of the $1 a pop from iTunes.

Can you use these these second party apps on an iPhone?
