Looks to be about the size of the big black Carpenter Bees we get here. Those things get your attention when they buzz around your head.

It was pretty big for a fly. About 1.25 to 1.5" long. Very fast flyer as well.

The biggest flyers around here besides dragons are the cicada wasps.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.

I would love to photograph a Cicada Wasp; seen a couple, but without my camera.

Another big flyer here is the Green June Beetle (much bigger than the little brown June Bugs). They get up to 1" and you can definitely hear them when they get close.

Never been good with BIF (bugs in flight) shots. Got close one but just missed.

I photoshopped in a dime just to give scale. I used the motor crack to calibrate the dime image. Not perfect but pretty darn close. This guy was huge. Looked him up and he's Tabanus atratus, which translates into gigantic freakin' black fly. ;)

That looks to be about the size of a horsefly. Those suckers will take a chunk right out of you when they bite, and they are relentless! If one thinks you look tasty, you have to kill it or it will not leave you alone. They'll even hold on if you go underwater, or just wait for you to come back up.

I HATE horseflies. They're damned sneaky; you don't know you're being bit 'till they're done. I had one bite that got infected, too. Yuck.

Back in Illinois we too had horse flys but they were about 1/2 the size of this guy. You had house flys, then deer flies which bite pretty bad and about twice the size of a house fly. Then horse flies which we twice the size of a deer fly that also bit hard. This guy was twice again the size of an Illinois horse fly, easily well over an inch long, probably more like 1 1/2 long.

I don't think this guy would sneak up on you. He was very loud, almost like a humming bird loud.

I'm talking about ordinary horse flies. I never hear them, and somehow they have a knack for coming at me from behind so I don't see them either.

So a tennis racquet would be an effective defensive tool against them.

I'm thinking electrified tennis racquet that's been soaked in gasoline and set on fire.

And swung forehand by the Hulk.

Oh yea. No way they could slip between the strings. :)

Actually for FD I got one of these.
