I was just looking at some of the other threads. I had totally forgotten about the Farewell to Tuesdays title. :) Ah.. no more Tuesdays. How nice.

I take it there aren't great drainage canals to deal with that much water.

We flood regularly around here, but it's not a problem to deal with. Other than a couple of low class gravel roads, everything is built up enough to deal with a normal flood. Bear Creek runs through my area and it will be flooded, but will only stay really high for a day or two. And really high is 12' above normal. The fields have puddles in them, but that will dry up today or tomorrow.

BTW, anyone noticing that for this thread you keep going back to page one or is it just me?

Navigation was changed in the recent update. The thread title takes you to Post #1. To go to where you left off, use "go to first unread."

Drainage canals are called creeks here. That is a small creek is normally not more than 2' deep in the deep spots and you could probably jump over it without getting your shoes wet. It's overflowing because of Lake Grapevine with is something like 25' over pool. The water coming over the spillway is about 3' deep and it will still take a month to drain off the top 3 feet.

Well, people asked for this change. Now we have a choice--go to the start of the thread or go straight to the new material. Before, the two links went to the same place. I'm getting used to tapping where I really want to the first time, breaking the habit of doing it the old way.

I never close the tab in my browser. When I restart the browser, it automatically goes to where I was when I closed it.

That will keep your place in just one thread. -?

Well, for the second time in my life I have baseball stitches imprinted on my leg.

Sleeping might be rough tonight. The baseball tournament on Saturday might be rough too.

Yay! Power is out and it's raining. Supposed to rain all day. I just love babysitting the sump well.

And I was going to make Chicago style deep dish pizza today, plus do some baking. :( Maybe we'll have power back in time to make pizza for supper.

At least people had the presence of mind to postpone the baseball tournament.

Generator? Back in IL we lost power several times a year. I picked up a small 6500w generator which was enough to run the sumps and furnace in the winter.

We have a generator. It's over 40 years old but it's about 3500W. Only 120V, but it will run the sump pump, water pump, fridge, freezer, etc. Not all at once though. It had been the farm generator until my uncle bought a PTO driven one. I replaced the head gasket and gave it a tune up. A few years later we put an electronic ignition on it instead of the points. It'll start up quite easily and never quits.
We can't run the furnace, but we haven't frozen yet. And lots of the neighbours have wood stoves or fireplaces, so that's not too much of a concern. The house water system is easy enough to drain, so a space heater in the small room where the water pump, softener, and water heater are located would keep things from freezing.

Dad and I have talked about picking up a bigger generator at some point, just watching for a deal to show up at an auction or something.

Power is back on. We're suspecting that there is problems within the circuit we're on. As soon as we get a decent rain the voltage drops. We were down to 39 volts this morning. Ontario Hydro's power outage map showed that it was only our circuit that had problems. Might have some insulators going funky.

yea, mind wouldn't run it all at once either so it was a juggling act. Empty the sumps, cycle the furnace, let the fridge cool a bit... repeat.

Yeah. When our power was out last summer we did that. Sump didn't have to be run very often, but we also have to run the water pump if we need to flush. Two fridges and two freezers needed some run time too. They'll stay cold for quite awhile, but not forever. We did empty the main fridge into the freezers because it's plug is difficult to get to.
