If you're using multiple cameras, under whatever lighting, the 478 (either the D or DR) can profile all of your cameras to customize the exposure for whichever one you're using (taking account sensor response across its dynamic range), but unless you do a lot of shooting where that would be important, you probably don't need that feature. It also requires a

Hey, thanks!
Those PUD workers have been working 17 hour days, 7 days a week, for over three weeks now. This is in an effort to restore power as quickly as possible to all those homes and communities who lost their power when the fires came through.A friend of mine works for the PUD, and I have not seen hide nor hair of him for the past 3 1/2 weeks. It's good for the community, as they will get their power back ASAP. It's also good for the PUD workers, as they will get their normal 40 hour paycheck, PLUS 79 HOURS OF OVERTIME, at time and a half. WOW! My buddy's gonna be rich!

I, too, worked 17 hour days.....for the three or 4 days that the fire was at its peak. That is, I worked photographing the fire. But I won't get a penny from it unless I can sell the images I took and that is looking less and less likely as time goes by. I wish I had outlets to market those kinds of shots to. Maybe I could do a book on the Okanogan Complex Fire. Gotta figure out a way to put all these fire pictures to use.

Jon would probably know this. Would the Sekonic L-358 still be the wise investment in light meters, or would it be beneficial to go newer (and more expensive) to get the L-478. This is mostly for portrait use. Probably never for landscape.

The Sekonic L-508, although discontinued (I believe) is still a good all around light meter. It works very well and had the ability to trigger studio flashes either with a sync cord or without if the cord won't reach. It's also useful for landscape work as it has a zoom-able spot reflecting meter in addition to the usual incident dome. They are available on e-bay but prices are all over the place.

You want these for flash, or for continuous lighting? If for continuous lighting, it really doesn't matter all that much.

What do you use for flash triggers? If you're not using PocketWizards of any kind, then you don't need the 478DR or the 358 with the (optional) PW trigger module. You can use the 358, or the 478D, in either corded or cordless mode with fixed-output flashes. If you're using the old stock PocketWizard triggers and want the meter to trigger your flashes when taking a reading, either the 358 (with PW trigger) or the 478DR will work. If you're using the PW TT1/TT5 triggers and want radio triggering of your flash, get the 478DR.

I have RadioPopper JRX-RS for my Canon Speed lights. I don't really utilize continuous lighting other then the sun. I like to use flash for fill outdoors but wind up blowing out skin sometimes. I never really notice the full scale blow out on the display of my 5dmk1 or my xti. I also want to work more on getting it right in the camera.

Sekonic seems to be the choice of many members here on Potn. I also noticed it has the flash option to press and you have 60 seconds to trigger for a reading. I also wanted the percentage factor as an aid.

Jonn, I will take a look at the L-508. I know I can get the L-358 for around $200 in the sale section.

Thanks again both for the helpful information.

Anyone give me some feedback on this 1dsmkiii? Would it be enough of an upgrade to a 5dc? Has a high shutter and is probably well used.

In my experience, anytime that I've sent a camera to Canon for a clean and check, they've sent it back with paperwork that had the shutter count on it.

Also, that's a 1DMkIII not a 1DsMkIII. So you'd be going to a 1.3 crop.

If you're planning to shoot sports or other action stuff it would be an improvement, otherwise I doubt it, but that also depends on the current condition (or lack thereof) of your 5dc.

iD3 was a fine piece of hardware and the price is pretty appealing. Been for sale a long time though. Got to wonder why.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

The price seems to be average. But there are others currently for sale that look like they may be in better shape.
Over on FM there is a 1D3 for $600 with 80k on the shutter. Seller says he is sending it to CPS for a clean and check. There's a second recent one for sale on FM for $500.

I don't think I've ever looked at the sale area on FM, not sure what their rules are on buying with only a couple of posts are.

The FM rules are a bit more relaxed. As a new FM member you can reply to sale items. There's no minimum required number of posts to sell, just become a paid subscriber. Most sellers are going to want or prefer some positive referrals from FM, but many accept eBay and POTN just as well. Not all that much different than here.

EDIT. One more thing I forgot earlier - on your FM profile you can add up to three key words and be notified when they show up in new posts in the buy & sell forum. So you don't have to look through dozens of threads every day. Just log in and check your PM's.
