Rather smokey here this evening. A fire broke out NE of here at at 1:30pm and 8 hours later it has consumed over 10,000 acres and gaining strength. The smoke plume is now over 30k feet in altitude. We're okay, but it's going to be a long night for a lot of folks. Lots of homes burned and numerous communities under mandatory evacuation orders.

Wow, tough for that area! I have a friend there, it sounds like there have been a couple outbreaks that have had people on the edge!

And just where might "here" be?

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

I asume it's in Central California, where just recently another fire broke out and extended the "burns" to past 10,000 acres...

But Tom, you're in Omak, how's the Okanogan situation there?

It was 100 degrees and clear here at my house in Vegas yesterday at noon (and got hotter later on). So the wife and I decide to take the dog up to Mt Charleston for a hike in the cooler weather. Up there it was cool and cloudy with some sprinkles. Shortly after we started the hike, a thunderstorm began, and we got rain, and then hail, the rest of the hike, and the temperature dropped to 49! It was awesome; I love hiking in that kind of weather. Of course there wasn't a dry spot on us when we got back to the car, and we were kinda cold. The dog got a little muddy (and wet of course), and decided to wait until he got into the vehicle to shake of. He's a 100+ pound fur-ball. The inside of my Highlander looks like a mud grenade went off.

I worked late yesterday but still wanted my steaks cooked on charcoal, not gas. So, I came up with this ingenious way to get charcoal ready for grilling in just under a minute. Worked fantastically. A few sheets of newspaper, a charcoal chimney and a leaf blower. Instant grilling.

Good thinking there, JJ. Plus, it looks pretty.

I had an In-N-Out double-double, animal-style, for dinner.

Is that your van? You ever get lucky in there?

Hey, Tony!
The fires here are still burning strong, but they have now moved to Nat'l Forest land, so at least for the moment communities and homes seem not to be under threat. Problem is, most of the grazing pastures got burned up a few weeks ago, and the cattlemen moved most of their stock to graze on Nat'l Forest leases......so now with the forests burning s heavily there is really nowhere left for many of these cattle to graze.

It got warm again over the past few days....99 yesterday. That doesn't help, as the fires spread so much faster when it's hot. Fortunately, a cool stretch is expected to move in tomorrow, which should slow the fire growth considerably.

"Here" is the area just south of Clear Lake. The fire is now at 40k+ acres and burning toward Clear Lake to the north and Pope Valley to the South. Middletown was hit hard overnight and the fire hydrants ran dry. Lake County was previously hit by two big fires.

Boy, it's funny, I avoid going out either at 100 or in a rainy 49! Here it's been a bit warm, it's hit the '90s occasionally...I've adopted a routine. I take the family dog out, even though I have some physical "issues". When it's sunny and warm/hot out, though, I wait until about 6:00 and there are some shadows over our walking terrain!

Wow, Tom! I had been hoping that we'd get some rain, not just "cooler" weather, but at least here the rain has been pretty scarce! I looks like we are "forecasted" to get some rain in the next few days, we'll see!

Western Washington is a whole other world compared to Southern Nevada. Maybe if I lived there, I wouldn't be so excited to walk in the cool rain, but it's a rarity here, and something to be savored. Of course there are plenty of folks, even here, that think I'm nuts ;-)a

Is that somewhere in California, as Tony surmised? You are in the U.S., right?

Yes, its in northern California about 70 miles N-NE of San Francisco and it's known as the Valley Fire. It's at 62k+ acres and 5% contained. Hundreds of homes and businesses burned down, but only one confirmed fatality so far. This is the same County that had two large fires back to back last month.

QUOTED IMAGE

There was a engineer around a few years back that would start his charcoal grill with a lit cigarette. And a gallon of liquid Oxygen...
