Help me pick my next lens?

I have a gripped T4i. Canon 50 1.4. Kit 18-55mm. Yongnuo 560 III.

I have a newborn on the way in November. I plan to shoot a ton of her, and other general family stuff. I like the 18-35 1.8 Sigma, but I may just be on the hype train. I like the Canon 35 2.0 IS, and the 100mm 2.8 non-L Macro or the 60mm 2.8 macro. I also like the 24-105 f4 cause I don't have any reach currently, but don't know that I need it? I will be shooting a lot indoors obviously, especially with winter coming here in NY. So I would put the longer zoom off till Spring.


I am also considering getting the 7D for faster focusing (and to have AFMA). And because they are going way low used at the moment. But I'm the type that will probably go full frame eventually, but that's at least a year out.

What would you do??? Sorry for the rant.

I started with 60D, 18-200 and 50 1.8.

Imo you don't need the reach just yet, at least not until she starts walking and going outdoor more.

I'd say either 35 2 IS or stretch for 100L. Both have IS and will be beneficial for those indoor low light shot.

DO NOT get 7D just because it's cheap! It won't satisfy you as it adds nothing IQ wise over your current camera, and the better AF isn't critical when she's still young.

Curious as to why you like 100L over the 60 (or 100 non-L) for crop. I do like the nice tight shots of newborns eyelashes and toes and whatnot, and I do like macro shots in general. I have considered that lens, but I'd like to hear your take.

I agree with the reach for sure. (meaning to hold off on the zoom)

Well as said, if you are planning to use it indoor, unless you are shooting with tripod, the added IS on the 100L will help you getting those close-up shots @ small aperture without bumping your ISO too high.

To sum up, buy long term. The added IS will come in handy for many years to come. Sure it costs more, but you really do get what you pay for

Yea I couldn't argue with any of that.

Do you think I'd use the 35 more or the macro more with the kid in mind? Obviously for macro shots I'd want a macro lens. But with my uses in mind, which aren't bugs or anything ATM. Which would you go for?

Canon's EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS - very sharp lens and great for indoor. A good one if you're considering staying on crop for a while. You can pick one up used for $600-700 I think.

Just use your 50mm 1.4, a new born is not move anywhere fast and you can zoom with your feet. After you shot with that you will now if you want something wider or longer.

I agree, your 50 1.4 will get you some great shots in low light too.

I think the 50 1.4 is all you need until he/she starts crawling. My little girl just turned 1 and most of my shots after she started crawling seems to be around 28-35mm indoors.

the 60 is great, you can get all the close ups you want (and you want many, they grow like weed at that age!) and then maybe the 70-200 f4 down the road, once she starts running around in the park. I 'only' had my 17-55 and the 70-200, the 60 came later, so I missed those close ups with my first kid.

I'm selling my 60 since I got the new 100 as I switched to FF, otherwise I'd keep it, it's a great sharp lens. And doing macro/close up is great fun too, you see the world in a different way suddenly! Especially with winter coming, it's a fun thing to play with on a dark day
