But with a boat.. This troller was heading back to harbor when I was taking some sunset shots up on the cliffs in Palos Verdes. This guy was a long ways off when I snapped him. I shot using a Tamaron 70-300mm lens at full zoom. There is no crop on this shot either.

Let me know what you think. Thanks!

IMO, you can barely discern the boat from the water, and it's oof...

Horizon is also off...

I see what you are talking about with the horizon, though it was *very* close, less than a degree off.. I think there is a bit of an optical illusion there.

As far as the boat being OOF.. I disagree.. The outriggers look crisp and in focus to me.

It's been hazy around here lately, and it shows in the photo. I suspect that may be giving the illusion of OOF?

I am not sure about the horizon and the OOF for the vessel, but the shot - over all - is not really exciting. No nice shade of colours and contrasts. Yes... foggy but not in a nice way - sorry!

Nice idea and colours. You probably need to wait for less haze and a conveniently closer boat to do much better.

I redone both below, trying to remove all the color noise in your image, even when I applied reduction on color noise in the purple tone, you can see banding, when I changed white balance on the second it helped a bit more, however it's still there. Also your horizon is off, I should of straightened it for you, but I didn't. I was more concerned about cleaning up the color noise.. Try shooting the scene again with all mentioned in mind, and hope for a boat closer to shore.

Something to consider, you shot in jpeg, try shooting in raw, you will be able to do a lot more in post processing.

I actually shot in RAW, but Aperture died on my MacBook Pro and I have not been able to pull the RAW shots from it yet. I have the originals squirreled away on an external drive somewhere. I will have to dig them out and try again.

Thanks for the ideas. I wonder how I would be able to utilize this shot and bring more attention to the boat? I really like it, but I know it still needs a bit of work.

Thanks!

Well if you were at your max with the 70-300, you would need a longer focal length to get a boat to appear larger. The draw back is you will have a less wide shot of the mtns.

Hope for two things, a clearer day and a boat closer to shore using what you have.

while the bluer reedit places more emphasis on the boat, I think it misses the entire point of the shot to begin with. The boat is supposed to be 'lost' in the vastness of the view and it being lower key makes that point. But this is just one opinion and this is art - we all see things differently. I vote for the original.
