I have just dipped my toe into the business of photography. Took my pvc backdrop holder, my tie dye muslin went off to a client yesterday. I haven't done much indoor work so I know I can improve, but am fairly content for a starter session.

Add a touch of contrast to them, they're a tad flat.

They look great to me! I'm actually waiting till I have the time and a few extra bucks to jump into studio work.

I have a few pieces of equipment already, just need a few umbrellas and backgrounds!

Maybe some props!

Great start!

Appreciate the feedback. Now that you mention it, I agree.

My equipment is super cheap. I figured it I liked it, I'd upgrade as I go busier. ;)

Nice shots, both pose and lighting.

Was your backdrop holder a DIY? Do you have pics/plans/website about it? That's my next diy project.

Yep, Here is the link: http://easypeasypie.blogspot.com/2011/03/backdrop-stand.html (external link) to the type of stand I made. Mine has a a coupler to adjust height and I can adjust width, too. I have $22 in materials and $10 piper cutter into parts. Honestly, I probably could have purchased a cheapo backdrop stand from Amazon. But is was a fun diy project that the hubs and I could do together. :)

Lighting looks good for the style you're going for. My only suggestion would be to add some distance between the subject and the backdrop, which should be much darker and more blurred than you have here IMO. At least, that's the way I prefer it.

Frankly, I truly dislike the standard tie-tye backdrop - it's dated and cliche. The only way I've found to redeem it is to push it into darkness and blur it into abstraction. At that point, it serves its purpose.

Nice photos

One thought, with the tie died background, a bit shorter depth of fiels would have blurred the background a bit.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that it could be better. I had 12' to work with. My back was literally against the wall. It was my first go with the back drop and probably my last. I found that I simply don't care for it either.

Are black, white and gray the main background these days?

Thank you. I agree that the dof being shallower would have improved the shot. I appreciate the feedback.

I understand your predicament with regard to blurring the background; you can only open up the aperture so far before you lose focus on parts of your subject.

You might consider getting a backdrop with less pattern. Hand-painted backdrops seem to be the best, although I've never used one. They're much more expensive, though. Another option would be to use a solid background and composite whatever pattern you wish in pp.
