Surpassingly I've had my DSLR for several months now and have only shot video, here is my first photo, I'm sure its awful but Im going to post here regularly to improve.

Now none of these were done with my camera, I was an under study, I was actually invited because they just wanted to use my equipment, but I took it as a chance to learn and gain some knowledge, the camera used was a Nikon D3100, 18-55 VR lens and 55-200 VR lens.

Not awful at all. My first suggestion would be to include his entire arm in the frame.

Not too bad. Why not turn on image editing in your profile and others may give you some different takes on it.
I think it's underexposed.

Get an external flash and use a bounce card for fill

Second, you say these weren't done by you, or with your camera, so I'd recommend putting up some of your shots...

Yeah, they're a little underexposed. Adjust your settings for available light, but still use a flash for fill. Outdoors, even the pop-up flash works fairly well for that, and might add a little sparkle to the eyes.

You capture people when they look especially happy - that is an art!

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

The shot was taken by me, but it wasn't taken with my camera, he was using my camera and I used his as my equipment is a little better.

I took a stab at editing the image of the ladies.

I like that one, that is more of their natural color, they looked tanned or really dark in my pictures.

And nice touch on the star, I really need to get more creative.

Portraits are extreamly hard, I always envisioned buying and camera pressing the shutter button then it would come out looking fantastic, i'll be posting more work here for you all to critique, looks like it'll really help me knowledge wise and always give me ideas I've never thought of before.

Also, the cropping of the lady on the right is IMHO, not a good thing. But all in all, a good effort!
