I hadn't thought about that until this discussion.
But I don't recall every having a 600EX-RT loose ETTL connection with my 5DIIIs. It doesn't seem any tighter in the hot shoe.
It may also be that the ETTL algorithms are a bit different with the 600EX-RT and 2012 cameras. They definitely did something with the interface to enable the extended groups etc.
There probably is a gear head somewhere that will figure it all out. I'm just happy that everything works together without a hitch.
