Thinking of getting a 60D again... or maybe a 700D or 650D?

Hi,

**warning fluffy preamble - skip to the last paragraph if you're short on time :) **

I did ask this on another forum but it must have slipped through the net but I'm considering a 60D (I would have prefered a 70D but not at the moment as I don't have the cash) - the reasons I'm thinking of it are:

  • More reach - the x1.6 can come in handy
  • Actuating screen for macro

I used to have a 60D and thought it very good, but sold as part of the upgrade path to my current body, but when it comes to macro I find it a bit restricting having only the flat screen which is a bit annoying when getting down really low, plus having taken my first macro in a while the other day I wasn't too happy - full x5 on the MP-E65 and I wasn't anywhere near as close as I was used to back when I had the 60D - sort of obvious but it surprised me at the time as it had been so long since I'd macro'd.

Anyway as I mentioned I had considered the 70D - both for movies (the pull focus looks great), working AF from all lenses, plus basically having a 7D with all the bits I loved from the 60D is a win win - but as I said cash isn't flowing and until I sell the HiLite I don't even have the cash for the 60, let along the extra for the 70.

So now that little epic is over I was wondering how do the newer XXXD series fare, I've not had one since the 500D and now they have the lovely movable touch screens etc should I consider one of those?

Although I've noticed the prices are roughly the same second hand which again was a little surprising.

What do you guys think?

I have a T3i and just bought a 60d a couple weeks ago because of the rock bottom prices. I like both of them for different reasons. I'm glad I own both bodies.

Upgraded from T3i to 60D about a month ago, should have bought 60D from the start. Much better camera than T3i, have a friend that has a T4i that I've used. To me its same as T3i. Haven't had a chance to use T5i so can't compare their. 60D just feels better in my hands and seems to have much more usability in the way you navigate thru it as far as settings. Hope this helps.

60D is a good bargain at around $500
But if you like the latest and greatest the 70D looks good

In the interim while saving for the 70d you can use something like dslr controller with an android device to mimic the tilt screen.

After using the controls on the 60D I think you would be very frustrated going back to a rebel body.

Depends what your shooting. Sometimes when I'm just out and about I'm not rushing around. Like I said. VW bought a T3i and 60d within the last 10 months. I teuly do like both of them. If I had to have one it would be the 60d. Rebels get a lot of flack because there is a badge in it that says "rebel". They're quite excellent cameras.

I wasnt bashing a rebel to bash a rebel, but having used XXD bodies for a few years when someone hands me a rebel I find the controls clunky and slow. If canon would put a control wheel and a joystick on the back of a rebel I would have no problem with them.

Thanks guys - to be honest swapping to a rebel wouldn't bother me, I can swap in and out of cameras pretty easily (my daughter has a 450D and I find that okay - miss the back wheel though)

Interesting idea with the controller but that would only help with the angle - thanks though I hadn't thought of that.
