saw a lot of good reviews on this card reader and bought this for my desktop.

there's a very silly issue now - the card reader stays connected to my desktop all the time. however, when i connect a sd card to it, there's no response unless u unplug and plug in the usb3 cable again.

anyone else experience the same issue as well? is there a way to make the reader stay active 24/7 when the desktop is on?

thanks!

What kind of laptop/desktop is it?

OS?
hardware?

Have you tried it in a USB2.0 and left plugged in 24/7 and tested?

Does it happen only after you read a CF card or do you only read SD cards?
Does it happen during card swaps when importing?

My older compact flash reader does something similar, which I presume is the same issue on my windows machine. If I boot the computer without a card in the external card reader slot, it loses the connection. As long as I leave a card in the slot at all times, the connection stays on. If I reboot the computer with a card in the slot, it reconnects. I never tried unplugging and replugging the USB wire. Just leave a card in the reader at all times, and switch the card as needed- see if that works.

Could be an issue with the USB3 driver as well, my system needed a driver update before it saw my internal card reader, then it was intermittent and a third usb driver and its stable and faster than my Lexar reader

that's the same issue i have, but i don't want to leave a card inside as a workaround, cos it'd shorten the lifespan of the card and the reader over time (i guess)?

usb3 drivers 'can't be updated' because i'm on win8 and the native drivers come straight from win update. it's already the latest.

it happens no matter whether it's CF or SD card. usb2 port is also the same.
no it doesn't happen during card swaps.

Did you click on the bit that says 'Downloads' on that page?

If the latest firmware doesn't fix your problem then You might try the bit that says 'Support'

No, I wouldn't think so.

You'll probably find the Win7 driver is fine, some companies fail to update the text on their download pages.
If in doubt contact Lexar support.

It is updating the card reader firmware not the PC driver as far as I know. I seem to remember having to do this to enable UDMA mode or something(??)

EDIT: if you do update it, I had to plug it into a USB2 port to update:

instructions for installing the LX01 Firmware Upgrade.

1: Before you begin, please make sure that the card reader is connected to your computer and all memory cards are removed from it.
2: Next, click the “Lexar Professional USB 3.0 Card Reader …Update Tool V1.0.0” file. This will launch the Firmware Update Tool.
3: The tool will display your reader’s current firmware version and the new firmware upgrade version (LX01). Please click the “Start” button.
4: When prompted “Are you sure you want to update…”click the “OK” button.
5: This process may take several minutes. Please do not disconnect the reader or turn off your computer during the update process.
6: Once the firmware update is done, the program will display the message: “FW Update Successful!” Click the “OK” button.
7: The “Firmware Update” dialog box should now display “LX01” as the current firmware for your reader. Click the “Done” button.

NOTE: PLUG UNIT INTO USB2 PORT

Are you choosing "safely remove hardware" before removing the card? That's essentially unmounting the drive from your computer. When you plug the USB cable back in, the computer mounts the card and reader as a drive again.
