If i have 2 550Ex, do I need a transmitter & receiver or will the 550ex master and slave act as a wireless transmitter and receiver?

So, do I need a st-e2 or radiopoppers or pocket wizards if I have these two flashes?

P.S. I shoot weddings so a long wire is out of the question. What do you suggest?

Within the limitations (line of sight, distance) of the optical system, yes.

For weddings certainly. You cant have the vagaries of line of sight be an issue. You need reliable communications between the camera and the flashes.

I suggest YN-622's, or pocket wizards. An st-e2 will still have line of sight problems.

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

A few years ago, I had three 580 EX II flashes. They do work, with one as the master and the other two as slaves, but it's 100% correct that you have to move them around and test different locations for the flashes to make them work each time. That's fine for dead subjects. Fortunately, people getting married are rarely dead.

Now I use an ST-E3-RT master with up to four 600 EX-RT flashes. The radio control is most certainly quite a bit more reliable than the old optical system. It also works just as well in strong ambient light.

Canon's radio system is of course expensive, but it still shows the advantage of radio over visible light in this case.

If you have a look through the "Coming Soon" products in the right side bar here -

http://flashhavoc.com/ (external link)

you can see the first 7 of 9 product coming are all related to flash units with radio triggers built in.

Though most will also have separate compatible radio triggers as well, built in radio is where its all going right now.

The coming YN 622 TX is almost a carbon copy of Canon's ST-E3-RT, at least from the outside.
Canon surely did something right there.

Actually its a photoshop image of a YN-568EX interface which I grafted onto a Canon GPS body :-)

I'd be more impressed if YongNuo actually do their own design though instead of be a Canon imitation.
