Hi,
I'm not exactly sure about there in England but here in the USA (in Michigan specifically) the rut usually starts in mid-October, with plenty of activity the last week of October and the first couple of weeks in November(I think peak rut is around November 7th) then activity drops off and is back to normal around the 3rd week of November.. That is what I have observed in my nick of the woods.

As to where to look.. humm.. just about anywhere..thick cover is best

Moved you to talk about Paul.

I know the Fallow Deer at Petworth Park are rutting early Oct.

My fields guide (Colins Complete British Animals) says "much of September and October" for Red Deer.

So probably best to get started. Shame I don't live in London anymore.
