I have a Ranger RX Speed AS and one of my heads has stopped firing. Instead of firing, it will arc from the wire around the tube to the metal reflector with a small snapping sound. I'm guessing that either the bulb has went bad or a connection has come loose.....I'm leaning towards a loose connection as I travel with the unit frequently and it gets bounced around the car and set-up/torn down quite a bit (although I am careful with it and always transport it in a padded case).
Anyhow, considering that a new bulb is priced in the $300 range, I would like to know for sure that the bulb is bad before laying down the money for a new one. I figured that I would simply swap out the bulb with a known good unit to see if the problem followed the bulb or stayed with the head. Seems simple enough but I can't figure out how to remove the flash tube nor can I find any instructions on how to remove it. Can anyone give me some insight on how this is done? I initially thought that it would just pull out but pulling doesn't seem to work (and I'm reluctant to pull too hard when I'm not even sure if that's how it's supposed to be removed).
I would certainly appreciate any insight.....Thanks!

OK, I figured it out. It takes some lite disassembly of the unit as the bulbs are held in with screws. Anyhow, I now have a couple of additional questions. First of all what is the purpose of the little wire that is wrapped all the way around the flash bulb? It doesn't seem to connect to anything but itself. Secondly, any ideas as to why this head wouldn't be firing if the bulb is good? (I don't want to go through the expense and hassle of sending it in if there are common know issues that have an easy fix). Thanks again.

Edit....one more question....after checking out B&H and Adorama, it seems that they don't carry the flash tube or even the lamphead separately..... all they have is package deals. I know both places used to sell just the heads and bulbs......maybe I'm not searching properly. Could someone provide me with a link or information on where I can purchase another head? It's important to my business to have at least two working units and I want to order another head ASAP while I try to figure out the problem with my existing unit.

Oh and BTW - yes, it's a 2400ws bulb on a 1100ws pack.
