I purchased a 5D3 early last year and kept my existing 7D. While the 5D3 gets used for most purposes, the 7D is still useful to me when traveling to destinations where both landscape and wildlife will be a focus. I can leave the 100-400L mounted on the 7D for wildlife, and use teh 5D3 for everything else. This saves a lot of lens swaps, plus I am ready for any type of shot.

The combination was very useful on a trip to Glacier National Park this summer. Quite often I hiked with both cameras, and could easily switch from landscape to wildlife without any delay. Wildife rarely waits for you to change lenses.

bannedPermanent ban

The obvious one:
5DIII - $3500.
Used 7D - $800.
Sometimes it matters.

That said, for the price of the 70D body-only, I wouldn't consider a 7D. Different strokes, though.

Dedicated APS-c shooter. Gripped 60D, 60 2.8, 10-22, 15-85, Σ70-200 OS and a big white something or other! Plus a 5D w/28-75.

Yeah, they go on the used market in the neighborhood of $3000+.

That sounds like a good reason to keep it, i HATE switching lenses, like that, I've been in a really good oppurtunities for amazing shots, but couldnt take them because i had to go into my backpack and switch out my lenses, its a pain in the ass

You won't go wrong with either, but if you are looking for a faster shooting FPS sports camera the 1D4 has the advantage.

I know the 5d will copmletely blow the 7d out of the water without a doubt, but does the 7d have ANY kind of advantage over the 5d3? other than being smaller and lighter of course

I don't have a dog in this fight but i don't think any decent camera can really "blow" another decent camera out of the water.

I used to have both 5d3 & 1d4, but prefer 5d3 and sold 1D4. The reasons were :
1. IMO, IQ from 5D3 is better than 1D4.
2. 5D3 has better high ISO performance. (I do hiking a lot and mostly go inside the woods/rainforest where shooting at high iso is unavoidable). I wouldn't go above ISO 6400 with 1D4.
3. AF is better.
4. Need cash to fund 600mm :)

Nevertheless, you can't go wrong with either one.

There's plenty of reasons to keep both;

- If you travel or photograph scenes that are unlikely to repeat themselves, it's nice to a backup body, (or if your just paranoid).
- Not having to change lenses as often.
- Having the reach of the 7d and the ability to keep your wide lenses wide with the 5d3.
- These two bodies are very similarly setup, making it easier to switch between the 2.
- Both bodies use the same batteries.

I'm very glad I kept the 7d when I went to 5d3, although the 7d doesn't get used as much as it used to. It also means lugging more gear with you. So there are trade-offs. I've started using the 7d more now after having the 5d3 for about a year, and it makes me remember, I really like the 7d!

The only drawback to the 7d in general is I've found it needs good glass to really shine. I started with a cheaper Tamron lens from my 10d days, and once I used good glass, I was so much happier with my images.

The 7d and the 5d3 are a great set of bodies to have.

Please click my mini-reviews in my signature, I think I did a 5D3 vs 7D comparo. :)

I am confused on why 2 seemingly identical threads were created? The comments will be basically the same between the 2.
