This football play where a player was flipped completely upside down looked absolutely spectacular in the viewfinder, but it was no more than adequate in review because of sideline clutter and the other player in the way. A second image with two players in mid-air also looked good at the instant but would have been more dynamic from an angle far to the right. Yet another image was effective because of the pose and the unexpected factor of the expression on the official's face. These factors are decided by instants and angles and can not be controlled by any equipment. Cameras and lenses do not move themselves into position, point themselves at the action or choose when to push the shutter button. The attraction of action sports for spectators and photographers is their unpredictability. A serious sports photographer knows an event can't be controlled and doesn't want to control the event. There's something approaching a thrill of the hunt at any ball game, and the satisfaction comes when you're fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time.

burnet44 Cream of the Crop More info | Sep 25, 2013 08:13 | #35 Its like hunting. Yeah I can go bear hunting with a bb gun. The bb gun being a 40D and the bear being a night game in a cave. Or I can go hunting with a 1dx. Both hunts need planning, technique, knowledge, ect. But Im gonna be a little better with the 1dx. Im a fair hunter at this time. Other types of photography IMHO isnt a hunt so much as. When the people come to you and you can control everything its like the fish jumping in the boat. Sure there is technique ect. I do feel that sports guys and gals shoot the toughest stuff except maybe wild animals. The playing field is bigger and more unpredictable. At least in sports its between the lines lol But aint no one shooting animals at night. Its probably a push between the two. I didnt say this because Im a sports guy. I have learned much during my time here. And I appreciate all of you who have helped me. There are a lot more variables in sports IMHO. My working like this keeps my wife at home, and that is preferrable to me than us both working and putting the kids in daycare. I'm a firm believer in the stay at home mom. It has worked very well for us for 17 years. Both kids tell her repeatedly that they are glad she is there for them when they get home from school or need her. We've enjoyed tremendous rewards (albeit intangible) from that decision. 1DX, 1DIII, lenses, flashes, wires and stuff
