Is the 24-70 L (mark 1 and 2) good for selfies?

Since you would be using it with a cropped camera the 24 mm would be like a 38.4 mm lens. I would say that it would be too close to take a selfie. It might work, but I don't think I would spend $2,300.00 to take pictures of myself.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

Any lens can work for selfies. For what you want to do a $2000 wont make much of a difernece then a 18-55. Believe me I've done a ton of selfies , it's all about your vision that can make it work

As Patrick has said, the crop factor of the T1i will make it more difficult than it needs to be, even at 24mm. The main thing I would consider though is the size and weight of the 24-70s (particularly the mk1)... I can't imagine it's the easiest thing to hold at arms length whilst also pressing the shutter!

The really useful DSLR features for self portraits are Live View framing and a fully-articulated fold-out LCD screen. Combine these features with the camera's self timer and a tripod, and you can set up an accurately framed self portrait. I saved a couple of dollars this way when I needed a passport photo.

Definitely not buying a high grade lens for selfies. I was just wondering if it's possible. It's incredibly difficult to do at 50mm, that's for darn sure. I've gotten some good results, but you know--50mm... Maybe a bit more luck when I'm bored at 24?

But if one of you could do me a favor. Could one of you hold the camera out and take a picture at 24mm and post the result?

This is a horrible shot, as I was just looking to get you something at 24 mm more than anything else. This is with a T3i at 24 on a 17-40 f4. The image is using a free RAW file viewer so not the best quality since it is SOOC with NO processing.

Define good. The perspective distortion involved in holding any dslr at arms length means its going to be really unflattering.

Nice one Ron :)

To the OP

why dont you get remote triggers and a tripod if you dont have one already.

doing a selfie at arms reach is what cell phones are for

just get an 18-55IS if that's what you're after...if you want to take better self portraits with your 50mm, get a tripod, and a cheap remote

Bored or stoned.
For some the "selfie" is all about freedom of expression and sometimes the weirder the better.

So Gonzo, I am assuming you are not referring to my lovely face as being distorted???? And I had to be really careful what I took pictures of in my office as I have 6 various primates (one you can see over my right shoulder) and many other animals in my office. LOL

I do have some remote triggers and a tripod... buuuuuut I like arm's length selfies because of the stereotypicalness of it.
