is this lens gonna have a fast enough af speed to shoot very fast moving sports at quality comparable to the focus a 70-200 can grab?

Yes, the focus is extremely fast. I use it to photograph dogs in motion and it keeps up just fine. The USM focus mechanism is very effective.

Focus is fast and accurate. However it (mine at least) is pretty soft wide open so you need to stop down a bit if you are looking for good sharpness. I guess it depends on the final output.

Definitely not as fast as far as useable aperture and focus speed as a 70-200 (the 2.8 II is in a league of its own in that range for good reason) though.

Yup - in bright light it will be just fine. What body will it be mated to? That can make a difference too in AF speed. Also, you selection of AF point may have an impact.

Ah - np; you should be in great shape then ;). A usable lens is critical for that type of work but your timing and "knowledge of the action" will be even more critical.

On a 7D with good light it should be fine. I've used mine for equestrian events when fairly close-up and it worked well.

I'll also agree that mated to a 7D it's more than adequate.
