Wholesale vs retail?

At the request of a local gallery I put together some prices for photos in odd sizes that I normally do not sell. They came back and asked if these were wholesale or retail prices.

Ummm... they're just the prices. (So, I guess that means they're retail.)

I primarily sell to individuals. I don't produce and/or sell in bulk. I have sold some things to other galleries and interior designers, but none have ever asked this question.

Seems to me one of two scenarios: They think my prices are too high (I consider my prices to be middle-of-the-road), or they're just trying to work me down.

If they want to sell your stuff in their gallery, they've got to make a cut on them too.

Figure out a price that works for both of you, so you can both make a profit. Once you've built that relationship, you don't have to do new advertising/business work every time you want to sell a print.

As Nathan has said they want to know if the prices you have given to them arethe price they will have to pay or the price the images are to be advertised for.

They will buy from you wholesale and sell at retail.

If you want control of the retail price what margin have you built in for them - 30%, 40%?

In this case they are doing the work of an interior designer and putting together pieces for a new office area. They are putting together their own proposal for their client.

These will not be hung on their wall to be sold.

Not sure if that makes a difference.

ETA: I guess you could say that the prices I quoted are my retail / their wholesale.

Galleries tend to have prices that are significantly higher than prices offered directly by photographers. Lets say you sell 20x30 print for $150 and they can sell the same print for $500. I think a symbiotic relationship should be established for both parties. It cant be a one way street. It would be unfair if they try to lowball you and get you to reduce your prices while already charging a significant overhead to the client.

Just be sure that if you tell them a price, and they mark it up, that you don't undercut them via your own website.
