Hi all,

I'm interested in a ring flash for macro photography and was wondering if anyone has tried this knock-off flash?

Yongnuo YN-14EX, TTL LED Macro Ring Flash for Canon.

If so, is it any good?

It's only $129.99 on Amazon.

Canon's version, the MR-14-EX Macro Ring Lite goes for a whopping $499.00, on Amazon.

Here's the link to the Kung Po version (I mean Yongnuo!):

Wow I cant believe no responses! I have the same question about that macro flash. I own several Yongnuo flashes and triggers and find that they work well at a great price.

Keep in mind it's a LED light... I don't have any real experience, but I think it's slower than a real flash.. such that you don't use flash power to freeze action, etc.

I suppose you'd use it more as a continuous light. I could be wrong tho.

Sorry, Dan - Yongnuo's own site sort of says "It's a Flash (with LED focussing aids)".
http://www.hkyongnuo.com/e-detail.php?ID=328 (external link) refers.
Not a lot more information than that though!
Someone, somewhere is just gonna have to buy one then we can all find out.

Oh I had no idea... I was sure it was led flash.
They mention recycling time, etc.. so I'm sure you're right.

Given its ETTL capabilities, and external HV port it sounds like the flash is indeed a xeon tube based device.

Just saw this thread... hope my reply is not too late...

I have the YN-Mr14ex. I bought it as I couldnt justify spending £600+ on the canon MR-14ex. I had the same worries about buying it, but in the end, i decided to bite the bullet and buy it. I have not been disappointed!!!!

The Yongnou MR14ex is a Ring FLASH, not an LED flash. Ive tried other LED ring flash and these are underpowered.
This is a proper flash, almost identical to canons ring flash.
It has a good build quality, that belies its cheap price. Works perfectly with my Canon 60D.

Tend to use it on Manual mode only, as auto TTL causes problems for the types of photos that i take (forensic type photos)
Not that it is the flashs fault, but I just need consistent flash (ie.same power and exposure so I can compare different photos accurately). if use auto, then obviuosly the flash power can vary and I m trying to avoid this.

Works well with my Sigma 105mm F2.8 macro, canon 50mm F1.8
Recycle times are a few seconds, extremelt quick even with rechargable batteries.

not really had any problems with the flash,
it even came with a set of 4 adaptor rings to attach to your lens, 52mm, 58mm, 66 and 72mm. Comes in a nice case too and arrived quickly after I ordered it off ebay.

Would highly recommend it, save your cash and spend if on something else for your camera....
especially if you are on budget.

I ordered one yesterday to go on my 60mm f2.8 Macro. This one is coming all the way from China so it will be a couple of weeks until I get it. I will report back. I have the 568EX II and it has been great.

Hi,
thank you very much for sharing your user experience on this ring flash.
Some questions please:

1: the unit can work as a master flash (like the Canon "brother") to control other off camera slave flashes?

1.a: If so it´s I guess with IR technology?

2: anyone who experience both (Yongnuo and Canon) could send feedback how the two compare, please?

3: I really would like to read the user manual. Is there a PDF version available anywhere?

4: What´s in the box?

Thanks again for all your help and attention.
Cheers.

Does the Yongnuo unit have High Speed Sync capability like the Canon MR-14EX?

I have been through 2 Meike/SkyBlue MK-14EXTs and both simply stopped functioning. Willing to try yet another elcheapo if it is anywhere near more dependable. Or even closer to the Canon in features.

TIA Steve

I've been interested in this one too. Wonder if they'll release an updated version now that Canon has upgraded their ring flash.

Here's some more info: http://en.yongnuo.com.cn …+Macro+Flash+YN-14EX.html (external link)

It says it supports Master TTL, each flash tube can be adjusted individually (great for creating shadows in macro), LED assist light, rear curtain sync. No mention of HSS. Looking around the boards here, Yongnuo has a great reputation, so I may pull the trigger on this.

My name is Jeff, not actually Jose Canseco.

Hi guys. I wonder if this thread is still alive. I'm looking at the YONGNUO Macro Flash YN-14EX. I would like to use it with Sigma 105 f/2.8 macro lens but what bothers me is that it (the flash) does not come with a 62 mm ring. The lens has 62 mm filter thread so I wonder about the"hardware compatibility". Anybody there with this lens/flash combo? Thank you.
