You're welcome. Just FYI, the ring I used was from SRB-Griturn in Dunstable. HERE (external link) is the one I used to experiment for you, while HERE (external link) is probably the better option for this specific purpose. (I actually use mine solely to couple a legacy Rodenstock Softar 2 onto that 24-70 lens, otherwise I'm a firm believer in the right size where utterly possible)

Phil ǁ Kershaw Soho Reflex: 4¼" Ross Xpres, 6½" Aldis, Super XX/ABC Pyro in 24 DDS, HP3/Meritol Metol in RFH, Johnson 'Scales' brand flash powder. Kodak Duo Six-20/Verichrome Pan. Other odd bits over the decades, simply to get the job done - not merely to polish and brag about cos I'm too mean to buy the polish!

if this thread is running still read on..... the yn 14ex is hmmmmmm good and BAD...the good if your shooting only to 1/250th sec speed buy it....if your shooting live subjects in the field DONT !...... many fly's etc move faster than a 1/250th sec shot !...... i know ive learn the hard way :) ....... im on a Canon 7D Canon 100 MM F 2.8 I.S. L series glass with 2x 31 MM and a 21 MM extension tube set up (all electrically connected) ....i get some good shots but only to 1/250th sec ...nor settings F 16 iso 200 1/250th sec .....

hope this helps..... the pic below needs a flash of over 1/250th sec as this shot is all you can get at a 1/250th .....this took 20 goes to obtain this poor image

I have to disagree with you and that for many reasons.

Even if the camera shoots with 1/250 your flash "bulb" is on for max 1/800 or so. (Canon 580ex on 1/128 output less than 1/40000 that just buy the way)

http://orionmystery.blogspot.com/2009/07/full-flash-macro-photography-3-things.html
so it doesn't matter how long or short the shutter is open if the flash is the sole provider for the light!
Second even without flash will you not get a sharp image with a 150 macro lens on anything larger than 2:1 with a shutter speed of above 1/350!
On a f 16 your refraction will already be visible and take away some of the quality of the lens.
The flash is worth every penny for what its made, close-up photography. Without defuser it will not be used, at least not on "wildlife" and in my opinion its not made for portrait.
So in short, if you want a cost-effective flash for close-ups and macro-work, get it and don't ask is it as good as the Canon or Nikon etc. If you wanted to spend that kind of money, you would not read this thread!

The amateur worries about gear, the professional about money, and the artist about light.
Always good light!

Totally agree with guido.coza.

Other than that I can confirm that this is indeed one of the best value for money ring flashes in that it does pretty much everything that the canon flash does except High Speed Sync. On a 7D that means max shutter speed of 1/250 sec. If you can't take decent Macro or close-up shots at that shutter speed then there are other problems that you need to solve for yourself.

I own this unit and I am very happy with it. It does exactly what is was designed to do. At between 1/5th and 1/7th the cost of the Canon unit, I am lovin' it.

This flash is great and does what it should when using it for what it is for MACRO

As is said if you can afford canon you would buy one but I can't and I not disapointed with this light

Can anyone post some macro samples taken with this flash being used? I'm very tempted by it

It's ok for macro stuff, the light is a little harsh, but I much prefer the light from a softbox/flash setup

JohnPh, great photos, could you provide some detail on the softbox setup you're using? Any links/model #s would be GREATLY appreciated. I am purchasing the 100mm L today for my 6D and love the light in your shots with the softbox.

-Sorry for digging up an old thread, but I'm not at 20 posts to send PMs.

+1

It looks like a Neewer (or similar knock off brand) softbox like this http://www.amazon.com …2&keywords=neewer+softbox (external link)

Yongnuo TTL cord and flash

I'm curious about that flexible arm though. Looks like a great setup.

Thanks!

It's just a simple flash bracket like this with the flash shoe taken off and the flexible arm screwed in. I use a Yn568ex and a ttl cord into a 23cm softbox link below

Here's a link for the flexible arm

The brackets are easily bought on ebay

I have since updated my macro rig so will try and get a picture up later on, I still use the same softbox but I use a different bracket with a small ballhead and have done away with the flexi arm.

I just tried one (YN-14EX). Setup on a 6D w/100mm f/2.8 USM. It worked fine when I got it yesterday. I tried some shots with it this morning. The flash commander mode was dead. It worked yesterday. I tried it with two of my EX II units, on both A and B, on all channels. Nothing at all from the slave units.

In all fairness to Yongnuo, the box was slightly damaged on arrival. Amazon just put the YN box inside a larger one, with no padding. I use YN 622 gear and it is flawless. I'm not slamming the company, just the packaging job Amazon did.

Sorry for the bump. But I am planning to buy this for shooting head shots of People. Does it put out enough light to get photos like this?

I don't know about the ring flash listed in this thread, but this unit has power to spare for your application:

https://www.adorama.com/fplfrf400.html (external link)

It can be set down to 1/128th power and is a 400WS unit. It also has a continuous LED light which can be used for focusing, as a video light or if you want even lower power for stills.

I like it as an almost perfect fill light, too.

C&C always welcomed...
On my images, of course, and on my words as well--as long as it's constructive :).

Using a small, flat, apparently directionless (on same axis as lens) ring light...just the thing to flatter folks in their portraits (NOT!)

(I know this is much too late, one year after the message was posted posing the question, but hopefully it will stop others from considering for this application!
