Congratulation's to Oracle Team USA on retaining the America's Cup.Oracle won today capping off one of the great comebacks in sports. After trailing by 1-8 in the race to 9 wins, they managed to win the last 8 races in a row to win the cup by a final score of 9-8.

The boats themselves are truly impressive. The masts are 13 stories tall and the boats can hit speeds up to 50mph.

Here's some photos from the event. All photos taken with Canon 7D and Sigma 120-300mm Sport edition w/Canon 1.4x III TC.C&C is always welcome.

Agreed.

Not sure about your side of the ditch Phil but it has been inescapable here for the last 3 weeks or so.

Fantastic boats & regatta. But, thank goodness it is over, the countries productivity can now return to normal....

And, just imagine having an Ocka as the skipper

Yeah it's been pretty high on the sports reports here too.
Can't believe the result though - how did that happen?
You Kiwi's would be bleeding wouldn't you?
And to think it's 30 years to the day since Australia II pinched it off the Americans.

Out gunned, either ran out of ideas or didn't have the funds to to any more development.

We had our chances, made mistakes and let it slip.

Love the shots. As a sailor I find these boats incredibly fascinating.

Glad to see you caught Da-Woody. He's from Dago and a regular on a sailing site I follow.

Thanks guys for the nice comments.

My sympathies Mark, must have been a huge heartbreak down in New Zealand.I actually felt a little bad for the NZ team and the many Kiwi's that came out to watch the races.Especially after almost winning the cup in race 13,only to have the race called off because it exceeded the time limit.

To photogeek,I too am very impressed by the AC72's.When you see the boats pass by at 40+ knots in person,it is truly impressive. Also the speed in which they accelerate from almost standing still to 30 knots is very quick.

If they use these style boats again in the next cup.Hopefully they can bring down the costs so more teams will enter.

Robert

To my knowledge, the team that holds the Cup makes the call on the type of boats to be used.

I'm not a sailing expert, but I think they are all considered yachts.Whether they be the more traditional monohull boats, the catamarans they used this year,or the trimarans they used awhile back.

Nice shots!! As a Kiwi I'm gutted with the result. Love that first shot both boats together and it gives a real feel for the speed and power of these machines.

Nice shots, love those close ups,the boats are so big they look miles away when you frame the whole boat.

what lens did you use?

Congrats on the win.

thanks nice shots. I love sailboats. Not red hot at first on these advanced watercraft. Oracle looked more like something that could advance by sailing through a time warp and finish the race 40 minutes ahead. Great fight to our sailing mates in New Zealand I'm sure we'll meet again.

Thanks X-images,Kiwi Kid,and sam walker for the kind words.

To Kiwi Kid,I was using the new Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 Sport lens with a Canon 1.4x III teleconverter attached on a 7D.
