Tablet for architect program

My Son in law just returned a Samsung 10.1 note tablet because it wouldn't do some "actions" he needs.
Not an architect, but his business builds houses and he takes part in some design.
I'd appreciate any advice on a tablet that would meet his needs, which are basically as follows.

Tablet size, not pocket
Able to talk to word & excel
Able to run/read and work sketch-up, an architect program.

I think Sketch-Up is a Windows-only program, so probably he needs a Surface (and check first - the low-end [Surface RT] might not cut it). Not sure, but I haven't been able to find any info about Mac, iOS or Android versions even though it used to be a Google product (it was acquired by Trimble fairly recently).
