I am wanting to try my hand at some HS football and some little league baseball games.
I will be shooting with a 7D. Some of the fields are poorly lit so I was thinking 2.8 all the way?
I am looking for a lens that will not kill me on the price tag but still get decent photos.
I have been looking at a few and maybe you can suggest more on a budget.
Thanks in advance:

So Far I have been looking at :

  • Canon 80-200mm 2.8L (Magic Drainpipe) used 700.00
  • Tamron SP 70-200mm f/2.8 LD AF IF Di- 650.00
  • Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens - Non-IS used 950.00

Canon 70-200L (f2.8 non IS) without a doubt. It's really a steal compared to the IS versions. Some people like the Sigma 70-200 OS (you don't need OS or IS for sports) but for any sports lens I'd take Canon over Sigma.

Granted, a 70-200 is a little short for HS football, so if you think you'll be shooting mostly day games, a 100-400 is a mighty fine lens. A largely overlooked lens is the older Sigma 120-300 f2.8 DG (non-OS). They can be found for about a grand used, and represent one hell of a bang-for-your-buck sports lens. I shot with one for a while and loved it about 95% of the time (the other 5% of the time it will drive you crazy!). Regardless, I still whole heartily recommend it despite its limitations.

Go with the used Canon 70-200 for $950.
You can use it for a year or two, and then sell it for $700. That's one dirt cheap rental.

You can get plenty close enough with a 70-200 on a 1.6 crop Camera like the 7D, especially at a high school football game.

I agree, the used Canon 70-200 2.8 you are looking at is only about $200 more than a new f4.

hotled,

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens - Non-IS used 950.00 would be my choice. I have a copy and I have the IS II version and there really is no difference when shooting fast action sports. The Non-IS is lighter in comparison, but not in results.
