help with silloutte??

hi all i seen this shot and i wanted a siloutte,can u offer any tips to help in case i get this kind of shot again,im working in this town for awile so i hope to get the oppurtunity again,thanx

It was more mysterious in the first shot, where less was seen of the surroundings.

Cropping the bottom part could fool the brain into thinking that this sculpture is many thousand years old and located somewhere far away from civilization.

haha well your almost right,its far from civilization for sure,im working in the far north in a small comunity no roads,fly in only,ill try a tighter crop,also feel free to edit if u like,any tips on comp to achieve a nice silouette greatly aprriciated thanx

I'd shoot it vertically since you won't be wanting any of the other landscape in it. It's a vertical subject anyway. Try it from multiple planes of focus and see what looks best (low ground through eye height).

any tips on settings also would be great,i believe i was on spot metering and av with quick shutterspeed,would a diferent metering be a better choice for silouettte,thanx

What I do to get the silhouette is expose for the brightest part of the sky but focus on the object you want to silhouette. This will often require you to use exposure lock otherwise the camera may expose the darker subject while you focus. Find a spot you can isolate the background then recompose the shot.

Or just shoot in manual to get the exposure you want.

I find manual works best for high contrast situations like that, program modes tend to expose all over the place. Usually for a shot like that, I'd expose aiming at the sky (without including the sun) and overexpose 1 stop. Of course, you can take a couple of test shots and adjust your settings after reviewing them with their histograms.

Not the best, but all I basically did was drop the shadows to kill the detail in the rocks and cloned out the civilization stuff in the lower left hand corner.
