I picked up a G1x II a few months ago and I finally got a chance to use it and I'm impressed by that little camera. Not little but smaller then DSLR.

I travel a lot and my current baggage is my backpack with my work folders, tablet, laptop, GPS and so on. Then a cloths luggage then a tool box luggage. I wanted to travel light and I do a lot of travel. But with my new job, I haven't traveled as much. I only have 35 nights at a hotel this year whereas I would have about 60-80 by now with my old job. I tried the DSLR route and it was too much go carry.

I just got sick of going to nice places and only have my phone. It's no slouch but no where near DSLR or even a regular camera.

I am in Paris Rivet now, and I stil havé not fun in a situation when I would want anything more than the 6D with the 24-105. The wife carries the 70D with the Canon 18-200. We do a lot of walking in old areas of the city, small narrow streets, local places where there are no tourists, even though we did take a boat on Seine. It is out 6th or 10th trip here (the stepdaughter lives here), so I am not much into tourist attractions any more. That camera/lens combination is just perfect.

I do have a Joby Gorillapod, will try to use it tomorrow after dark at the Louvre.

Photos just get better once you're past the touristy stage. Jealous of you about now, Lbsimon. Wish I were there!

RHChan - Lol. I have 0 nights at a hotel at my current job. At my old job, also 0 nights. Woohoo!

I wish. But I also enjoy my travels. Gone to Italy, Switzerland, France, Germany, Poland, Austria, UK, parts of Canada and mainly US.

Went to Hawaii for my honeymoon for free first class including hotels.

Where do you work and are they hiring?

Unfortunately no. It was over a spread of 10 years so. I went from the mailing industry to rehabilitation robotics and now I am in cell culture/fermentation. All field service support/engineer work. I actually just got back from Philly Tuesday night for a one night visit. It's a fun gig but there are times where it's boring being by yourself so you have to make the attempt to go out and meet people. Fun gig but gets tiring after a while.

With all the travels, a small compact camera is what I need to go with. The G1X is not perfect but for me, it's perfect.

I've heard this so many times, and it's so relevant to what you just said about the G1x.. 'The best camera is the one you have in your hands'. When we went to Washington DC, I "only" brought my phone (a Nokia Lumia 1520 at the time) and my S95, and I couldn't have been more pleased (especially when we inadvertently ended up walking 10+ miles one night, including walking about a block away from a bad part of town apparently). We were being tourists. I wasn't going to be blowing anything up huge. It worked out just fine for us, to the point where I almost want to tell the wife that I don't want to bring the 5D3, 16-35 F/4L IS & 24-70 F/2.8L II to Bermuda. We'll see what happens.

Part of my job is to go out and meet people. Fun gig, but gets tiring after a while. -?

As I think more about it, the 35L and 85L may be the only two lenses I need to take with me when I travel. If I want something wider, then I could stitch a couple of images together or we could use our cell phones for a quick pano. You're right. We don't need to blow things up.

Been toying with the idea of going 16-35 & 70-200.. 70 isn't too bad on full frame, and will give me a lot more reach with the sacrifice of 35-70 not being available. The 70-200 is soooo easily identifiable though.. Decisions, decisions...

What do you mean? Photos from it or the lens itself? Only thing I don't like is the weight of it.

I don't like heights, but this kid climbed past the safety railing at Moro Rock at Sequoia National Park (external link). His selfie helps identify the internet age we're living in, but would have been funnier if he had a selfie stick.

Bernie, don't forget your selfie stick... lol.
