SP 8355 (with a confession)

I came across this relatively pristine SP tunnel motor today. The paint was in good shape, the primer hadn't started to bleed through the lettering, the Scarlet on the nost was intact......It almost looked like it had just come out of the paint shop.

The only problem was, they had stenciled 'GECX' on the cab side below the numbers. We eliminated those with a little help from PSCS2.

So, I guess the picture's a phony, but it could very well be one of the few remaining SP engines with a relatively intact paint job on it.

Sad.

great catch , sad that i didnt shot traisn thill about 3 months ago i missed out on a lot of good stuff

There's no time like the present to get started. Twnety years from now, all these fancy new engines will be tired old war horses, and the pictures you take today will serve as a reminder of how things used to be. I only regret that I didn't take more when I was younger. They were still running steam when I was a kid.

nice shot. i know nysw has a few of the older sd40t-2's in there lineup in the sp paint but painted over the logo. Ina few years, UP will probably make a few units like this (heritage).

The funny thing is, I always hated the 'Bloody Nose' paint scheme. I remember as a teenager sneaking into the paint shops at Taylor Yard. I saw an Alco PA that had just been re-painted in the then-new livery, and being aghast. It was such a letdown from the old Daylight colors. Then, when they abandoned the Black Widow freight colors in favor of it, I thought that was the absolute end.

Now I find myself feeling nostalgic about the Bloody Noses. I really miss them.

I am in the process of digitizing a bunch of my 20+ year old slides and have a bunch of these old guys in their glory days. Nothing like hearing these engines rumble across Donner Pass.... anyway - very nice shot. I miss western railroading...nothing like it. Cheers.

Nice shot. The engine looks fantastic. Is it an SD40-2? The grill at the back looks different.

That's what it is---well, almost.

It's an SD40-T2. The T stands for 'Tunnel.' They lowered the grills for running in tunnels and snow sheds.

Midwesterners can still see some SP SD40T-2's, on the I & O in good condition. I think there is one in use at Delta?, Oh yard. I know this one is on long term lease to the I&O. This one was shot 2-27-05.

Nice capture of something that isn't yellow. Really great to see some colorful motive power here and there.

I think I want to give this train shooting stuff a shot. Interesting.
