I'm not a pro and own a 60d, I don't use on camera presets as I only shoot raw, I mostly use manual mode but sometimes use tv or av for specific shots (sports and portrait for instance)...I'd say I use my camera at a very basic level. I was wondering what makes people (amateurs only, pros may have specific needs) feel their camera is not enough, I can understand megapixels reasons, but any other features?

If you find that you need something from a camera that your current body doesn't offer. For me, it was the poor low light AF and the small body that made me upgrade from the 350D.

I went from a T3i to a 60D because size + weight ( Fits my Hand Better ), Top LCD Panel ( I use it a lot ), additional Direct Buttons, Brighter View Finder, Two Mode Dials and longer Battery Life...............

I am not a pro. I am just an amateur with more money than sense. My current camera is a 60D, although I have a 5Dc I am playing with. What makes me need a new camera. Nothing. I don't need the cameras I have.

What makes me want a new camera is a bit more complicated. I want a new camera when I find the camera I am shooting to be limiting in some way, and an alternative exists. The first new camera I wanted since acquiring my 60D was a 6D, primarily for its jpg ISO 6400+ IQ. While I can shoot my 60D in good light with decent results at 3200 that is as far as I like to go. ISO 6400 is iffy; fine in decent light, not so fine as the light deteriorates.

The second new camera I wanted is the 70D, primarily for its AI-Servo AF. The 60D has respectable AI-Servo performance. My grandson is getting older, more mobile and faster. Couple that with my decreasing contentment with the 60D's AI-Servo performance and now I want a 70D, too. Still debating.

Just the rambling thoughts of a photoholic with more time and money than sense and talent.

Dedicated APS-c shooter. Gripped 60D, 60 2.8, 10-22, 15-85, Σ70-200 OS and a big white something or other! Plus a 5D w/28-75.

I have a 10d and am looking to upgrade. One thing that I shoot a lot of is racing/sports. The auto focus has had me scream a few profanities every once in awhile and when lighting fades the noise can get real bad real quick. ISO 800 is as high as I will go.

Canon 10d and 50d, Quantaray 19-35, Canon 35-80, Canon 50 1.8, Canon 70-300mm 4-5.6, Canon 100mm Macro, 580 exII

Its not so much 'not enough' as 'nice to have'. I tend to consider buying a new camera if the feature list has a number of things that I think would be useful. For example I do quite a lot of motorsport photography so if a camera has better autofocus or a higher frame rate I might consider it. It is not usually because the current camera is inadequate, but more likely because the newer model could be even better.

well, there are always those that need to be the first on the block with something new (read an iphone 5s sold for $10.000 on ebay! Hahaha!) and there are those with enough money to just upgrade every time something new comes along (might be a brother or sister of the first kid on the block). Neither applies to me.

I upgrade when there's enough improvement and enough features to make it interesting to me. And the price has to fit the worth.

So I added a 5D3 to my 40D this year, but I won't upgrade my iphone 5 until next year or the year after. And my 10 year old Tacoma truck will be many years older before I get a new car. (or get washed for that matter, LOL)

Never felt I'd get my money's worth out of going to the 50D or 60D, though I might get a new crop next year, and have my 40D converted to infrared. The changes and upgrades made to the xxD line were just not worth it for me. Others have use for them of course. Maybe they print very big or do lots of video, etc. I haven't taken one sec of video with my 5D3 yet, still learning the photo side of this monster :-D

40D, 5D3, a bunch of lenses and other things

I am still using my IPhone 4S.
I am considering the 6D for low light performance, but haven't been willing to fork out the dough yet.
The 70D looks like a nice camera, but improvement in image quality over my 60D hasn't been enough to sell me on it right now. I don't shoot lots of video and I like my 60D too much to give it up.

I used to use 60D, but changed to the 1D4 because of:-

1. better auto focus
2. more fps
3. awesome body that can take a beating
4. better high iso performance
5. the feel of a 1D series body (you would not want to use anything else after that :()

and it's a downgrade in terms of megapixel numbers. LOL!

cheers!

I switched up from my XTi to my 50D due to better AF system, faster burst mode better high ISO performance, xxD layout (top screen with control wheel) I also wanted liveview for doing certain things.

GAS. Gear acquisition syndrome. Look around in your area for a support group. Meetings are held twice a week. Tough habit to break but with some effort you may be able to kick the habit.
