More pixels, better autofocus, better high ISO performance. I usually upgrade every other generation. I probably keep my 1D4 and upgrade my 5D2 next.

Does anybody upgrade before body becomes too old just to get a decent price on secondhand market?

People do indeed. You'll even see statements in threads where people say they have or are selling their current body before the replacement model comes out in order to get as much as they can for it.

IMO it's time for new gear when you recognise that your current gear is holding you back and can determine exactly why. The skill and vision of the person behind the lens is important, and it's true that a really good photographer can take excellent photos with just about anything; however, missing a shot because your gear can't keep up with your vision is frustrating.

I am an amateur/hobbyist and I admit I gave in to gear lust. My 40D was all I was ever going to need but it was stolen and I had to replace it so I got a 7D 2 years ago. The 7D will do everything I will ever need a camera to do and probably more than I can ever do but I wanted to move up to full frame so I bought a 5Diii. I did make a slight concession and purchased refurbished cameras, both the 7D and 5Diii, through the Canon Loyalty Program so I didn't pay full price. That is a reasonable justification isn't it?

I was heading out on a weekend trip with the family. I was tired of trying to watch silly cell phone videos of our trips and wanted a dSLR that had video. I ended up trying the Nikon 3xxx something or other that came with 2 lenses, realized after the weekend it wasn't really much more camera than my XSi and took it back.

After an all-nighter of research I looked at a bunch of bodies around 1,000 bucks and ended up with a new 60D and three lenses for nearly that. It's a generation back, but it does all I need. Oh, and it has video, which was the only thing I was trying to upgrade in the first place.

I got into Canon with the introduction of the T1I. I had just gotten out of the hospital and felt I deserved it.I knew my youngest daughter had the Canon XT and knew of the interchangeability between the compact sensor Canons. I used it for few months and wouldn't you know it they announced the T2I! I gave the T1I to my oldest granddaughter, When the 60D hit the shelves I handled one and here we are. My youngest daughter got the T2I.
