Question,
If I go to say a high school football game and take photos of the game can I legally post the images on Smugmug and allow them to be sold using there shopping cart without a release form all the persons in the photo?

Interesting article, and, as far as it goes, pretty informative.

I would have preferred, though, that he included "facts" about when in fact you do need model releases, as well as how to deal with outlets like stock agencies and many of your "contests" that require releases...

Dan Heller, in the blog post I linked to, lamented about stock agencies and the fact that you either play by their rules or you don't play. The agencies are going to err on the side of caution in terms of what they require, and since they don't have ultimate control of the use of an image (for example, it may be used in advertising to imply an endorsement from the person in the image), their rules aren't likely to change.
