I like the idea of 24-105, obviously it feels a huge gap for me. But f/4 doesn't cut it, I see myself switching to my 40mm often, to get better lighting. I do plan on purchasing a 1.8 85mm on Friday, so I was thinking that will kind of give me a larger focal length (not 105 but whatever) would selling the 24-105 and getting the 24-70L IS be smart, obviously optics and the 2.8 are a plus, but will I miss the extra 35 in range even if I do have the 85?

I dont think you would miss it. I bought the sigma 24-70 so i have a standard zoom. After that i noticed that i might be better off with only (mainly) primes...

I assume at times I get lazy, I don't have a proper bag for all my equipment, so I think the thought of moving past 3 lens bothers me, but I think I'd love a setup of my 10-22, 40, 85 and 135. May not even need the zoom.

What will you be gaining by selling the 24-105 and getting the 24-70? They are both F4 and both have IS. I'm not even sure the 24-70 has better optics...so what would be gaining from this move. It will cost a lot to make the move as the 24-105 goes for $600 now.

Unless there is a new lens out, you are a bit confused. The Canon 24-70L IS is f/4. The Canon 24-70 2.8 does not have IS. You can get both f/2.8 and VC in the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC, though.

Dedicated APS-c shooter. Gripped 60D, 60 2.8, 10-22, 15-85, Σ70-200 OS and a big white something or other! Plus a 5D w/28-75.

I can afford none of the three: EF 24-70 2.8L, EF 24-70 f/4L IS, Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC. However, at those prices, if my shooting demanded that I purchase one of them, it would be the 24-70 2.8L. If I am shelling out $1,000+ for a lens, I will get the best one I can find.

For reference, I get by in that range with 15-85 and Tamron f/2.8 lenses (17-50 & 28-75). For the money, I am happy with all three of them on my 60D.

It depends on your shooting style, but when i started photography i always too the best few lenses with me. After learning more and more i restricted myself to a maximum of 2 lenses at a time and it works flawless.

Sometimes i just take one lens and i never felt like i was missing a shot...

Im more happy with 2 superb shots of a day out instead of 100 shots which are just ok because i could shoot all i wanted...

I just received my 24-105 1 week ago. I tested it against my sigma 35 at f4 and above. Surprisingly the difference between those two lenses are barely visible even at 100% zoom. I expect the 35 to be alot sharper but it doesnt. 2.8 to 4 is only 1 stop. The IS makes up 3 stops. For me, if you dont need the shallow depth of field, no reason to go for 24-70 2.8

Thanks for that, I think the DOF is the look I go for at times, maybe I'll jus use the 85mm

I shoot street, travel, landscape so mostly everything what you can shoot.

However, for travelling i always take a few lenses to the hotel/whatever and everyday i just take one lens and it forces you to use it right. When you only got one lens you learn how to properly use that special lens, and you might find out why you need the lens. It also forces you to be creative and to capture what you see in a way (with primes) where you have to move yourself to get the shot

If you shoot event and get squeeze in a tight place with full of tables and the party, you will love the zoom beside if you shoot for Clients, you can't have 2 keepers out of 100 :). Zooms are important of event shooter, i.e. In a tight room; An event that restricted too much foot zoom from the P.; shooting multiple focal length at the same time (group of 4, 10, 2, 20, 6 people)....

I shoot partys too. All with my 16-35mm. I never said i dont use zooms, i said i only use one lens at the time. My client loves my wide-angle partypics and as long as he loves it i see no reason to take my 50mm 1.2 too (even if its more than 2 stops faster and better for low-light. But since i use a flash anyway)

That is great. It is good to know what your client loves ahead of time. Please don't get me wrong, I am not challenging you. I am just wondering, what if the only lens you bring along stop working and how can you shoot event and be happy with 2 superb shots of the day out instead of 100 shots?

From your previous post:
