Interestingly enough cdi is this happening in all RAW files? I've experienced it too but on very rare occasions for some reason. Even opening the RAW file via other applications it looks they same way. Currently I've only seen it once with my new XT and that was using the flash @ ISO 400 indoors.

It's on all the images I've shot so far. A mosaic looking noise. It's not as bad on lower ISO images (obviously - less noise for it to do that) but my jpegs never look that bad.

It must be RSE doing it. I didn't think to try this before....but I opened the same images up in DPP and the noise is more *normal*.

That's really odd. I don't use 'sharpening' in RSP, but I have started using the detail extraction in it (normally around 15-25). The caveat with this, is that it's best to only get RSE/P to apply sharpening when outputting at final resolution.

I've found though, that the detail extraction is much better than straight sharpening - when used in moderation it doesn't cause halos, and images can be resized after using it - unlike 'regular' sharpening.

RSE/P still seems to do some noise reduction which leads to this effect

You can turn that default off with the button at the top-left.

Yeah I turned the defaults all the way down. Not sure why it's like that still...I want to like RAW but this noise handling is keeping me away from it. DPP isn't exactly user-friendly, IMO, so I can't see it becoming part of my workflow.

You mean the button that opens the menu for help, etc? In that menu I've selected processing params. and various settings - it always does some noise reduction. I think the problem is the way it's been coded so that detail/noise/sharpness are all weighted values in the processing.
