both are not suitable for fast action sports or macro work.. they are good as general walk around lenses

agreed. although I do find that the sigma 17-50 would focus faster than most other lenses I had in the range. It is no slouch.

I have never used this range for sports. I imagine that its definitely possible but not ideal.

I had the sigma 24-60 ex and sold it for the 24-105.
Better range, just as sharp as the sigma, better rendering of the photos, far more accurate af, and as a result, more keepers.
I don't regret my decision as a walk around lens, but I do wish I had 2.8 for some indoors shots.. That being said, even with the 2.8, it would miss focus or just f-up shots.
I felt the sigma was just a bit boring.. nothing really stood out in pictures.

Canon 6D, Canon L 24-105, Zeiss Distagon 28mm 2.8, Planar 50mm 1.4, Planar 85mm 1.4, Sonnar 135mm 2.8 & Zeiss Mutar 2x, Canon 50mm 1.8

would you reccomend the 24-105 for a general lens and macro here and there with an extension tube?

Yes, absolutely.

This is from the top of the church where I shot a baptism on my wife's side.

I posted a few.. lighting was strange in the church.. It seemed like lighting was great facing away from the altar into the pews, but facing the altar it seemed horrible.

I have the 24-105, mine at f4 is soft indoors at basketball games. I shoot the lens on my 40D. That could be the problem. I haven't tried it on my 7D or 5D3. But overall I like my 24-105.
