Beware Best Buy?

I bought a "brand new" 6D from Best Buy last week. When they gave it to me, all the extra stuff like the strap, charger and manuals were in a plastic bag under the cash-wrap. I didn't think much of it till I got home. When I opened the box, both the camera and the lens were in the white box inside the regular box. Another weird sign as usually just the lens and charger/battery/strap go in there and the body goes in the main box. Thought nothing of it again.

I then charged the battery, opened up a brand new memory card and snapped my first glorious picture of my kitchen.

I then took out the card, put it into my card reader and opened up the file to see... IMG_000735.cr2 or whatever. The point is, my brand new camera had a first file number of 735.

Is this normal? Do they take 700+ pictures on the assembly line? They said it wasn't a return and it wasn't a floor model.

Needless to say I went in the next day and they ordered me another one. It came in today. I'll report back when I take my first picture with this new camera.

Edit: That may not be very fair. I have had ok experiences with the Best Buy in my area. I'm just frustrated.

I never buy camera/lenses from best buy. Stick with B&H, Adorama, BuyDig etc.

And I normally would have but I had a shoot planned 2 days after I bought it and I wanted it for that shoot. Sure, I could have used the 1Ds... but instant gratification! Plus B&H was closed for a week.

Sorry to hear about that. But what you said right there should have given you a clue that it's an open & returned item. It's odd though that you would sell it as brand new. (In general, I find that they brand it as open item.)

Glad they exchanged it and it worked out for you though.

Yeah, after I saw how many pictures had been taken I went back and asked for whatever open item discount they'd normally give for it but because apparently nobody knew how that many pictures got on there, they said they couldn't and just ordered me a new camera. They even let me keep the first one until the new one came in. The first one now has well over 1000 pictures on it by the way. They said they are sending it back to Canon. I'm sure one of you will get a great deal on it refurb from them haha.

Actually, your SD card number may jump based on what you've used it for before. I think.

I understand that, which is why in my original posting, I noted that it was a brand new SD card out of the package.

I got my 5d2 from best buy. This is when the camera was running about $2200 most places. Best Buy had a promo for it running 1999. I wanted one bad, and had a narrow opportunity to upgrade from my current body at the time. I went to buy through the site and then just clicking "check for in store pickup" for several different stores. I found that one of the best buys in town had it. So I paid, and went in to pick it up. Once I got there they were unable to find the camera. I had to wait for over 30 minutes in the 'online purchase pickup line'. Just waited patiently. Finally they found it. Brought it up and explained it had probably been purchased online by someone else then returned to the store. So I was a little bummed and said well, I don't really want to pay for a used camera, is everything there?? They all looked around and no one knew if it was all there. Guy asked if they sold it to me for their max discount of 33% if I would want it. I asked if they would still honor a return and be said within 14 days only. So I did it. Since I paid online they issued a credit back to the card i paid with. When they gave me the slip to sign i saw they credited back over $800. I asked and he said he went ahead and credited back 33% of their non sale price and thanked me for my patience. That's how I got my 5d2 for way below market.

The even better thing.... The camera was indeed new. It may have been a return but the body was not used, and I'm 99% certain the box hasn't been opened.

That isn't the first time. I had that same issue (purchased a brand new t3i with my coworker). I told him to get it from amazon, B&H, or adorama, but he insisted on "instant gratification". Came home and the SD card was a brand new SD Extreme and the number was in the thousands.

He went and tried to return it, and BB refused and said he would have to pay the restocking fee for electronics (?). Went to another BB, they won't take it either because they don't want to take a hit for that store, but said that if we talked to management they have to take it back. Went back to the other store, raised hell and got the refund after ~3hrs. Lesson learned, never buying anything from BB again.

Wow. Had they offered me that I'd have jumped on it! But they said no discount at all. Boo!

I think a lot depends on how much the people care and the particular store. That store happens to be incredibly busy and in a rather "swanky" area of town. A different best buy here in town gave me a ton of grief over a $20 screen protector for a phone, go figure.

Yeah, I do agree. Though, they don't normally carry the 6D in this particular store so they couldn't get one in without it being purchased first. I couldn't afford to buy another to get it in while I held on to the first one so the manager there pulled out his own credit card to purchase the new one so it would come in the store. When it came in this morning, he cancelled his order and we did the exchange then. I think that's pretty good customer service!
