I can't imagine how cold it must have been there. Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Lots of elk, they sometimes wander around in town. I always see deer. There are moose and bighorn sheep too, but I haven't seen them. I did look up the number of visitors to various national parks. Rocky Mountain gets about 4.5 million per year, which averages 12,000 per day, that average is including winter, so summer I think is up more like 15,000 per day. And a significant percentage of those go to Bear Lake, which is the Grand Central Station of the park, so yeah, very busy park. I like to go in the winter when not nearly as busy, plus no reservation required. It is cold though.

The motel desk clerk said they had 3 elk hanging around the courtyard the morning of the day I checked in, and I saw a few deer right along the road (last year a little flock of turkeys sprinted across the road in front of me, plus about 40 elk). I asked a park ranger about moose and she said there were some from time to time in a lower part of the park, where I didn't visit. And she said sometime big horn sheep come down for water.

Elk out in the sticks are pretty skittish, but the ones in Rocky Mtn NP seem to be pretty well habituated to people. Thanks much!
