Unfortunately, my name is too unusual. It doesn't clearly identify me as female anyway, so I'd still be "sir" and "he" when people made the default gender assumption.

Have you considered chosing a fictional girl's name? I know of another female POTN member who thinks her real name is too difficult and she too chose a fictional name. I agree with Maureen in that it would be so nice to be able to call you something other than OhLook.

Yes. I dislike the idea because it seems dishonest. To sign myself as Sally or Loretta or something would be too close to pretending that that was my name. Besides, there might be a real Sally or Loretta at POTN who would feel infringed on. "OhLook" is so obviously not anyone's true name that the issue of deception doesn't come up.

Isn't "OhLook" feminine in that women, more than men, are likely to point to something outdoors and say to their walking companion "Oh, look!"?

I assume it matters to you or you wouldn't have corrected the poster who miss identified you. Maybe you could just select a more feminine avatar to help avoid confusion...or make your current avatar more feminine. :)

As the "mis-quoter" Harm, I think your idea is terrific. I could never have mistook a pink avatar as belonging to a "sir"!

As for "OhLook" being more feminine because women are more liable than men to point things out to their walking companions...that is just plain wrong in my experience. My lady often seems almost oblivious to her immediate surroundings because she focusses much more intently on whatever she is contemplating as we walk than I do. I am the multi-tasker in our family, mostly through necessity in my mostly self-employed life and thousands of miles of single-handed sailing, whereas she is an excellent research scientist capable of intense concentration. So it is me who points out things as we walk! (Is that my feminine side speaking?):D:p

But OhLook...don't change a thing....now we know you are a Lass not a Lad...we won't be making the same mistake again!

Growing old disgracefully!

Thank you all for your helpful suggestions, and the other ones, too. I've solved the problem by using a signature for the first time.

^ Awesome as they are, at first I thought the top two were one image... pronghorn in front of the monument... that would have been perfect. :D
